If you buy a JD, go to a JD store, not Lowes or HD. From what I've read (here?) they are not the same. Our JD from HD was always falling apart.

if speed/time and ease of use is primary, zero turn is the answer. I suggest something from dixie choppers - any machine will cut grass, but the units like this go fast enough to have wind in your hair and the cut grass still looks great

I don't know if it is still true but definitely was the case 7-8 years ago when I bought my LT 160 from the dealer. LT series were dealer only and the JD website, brochures and the dealer all stated the LT would outlast the HD / Lowes JD series by a significant margin. The HD/Lowes series were built to compete with Sears and were of a much lighter construction yet had higher HP rated engines because that was Sears big claim to fame - higher HP engines .

Every spring, I change oil, filter, air filter, new plug and blades. No problems whatsoever and over 900 hours on it now.

This one from the random pics thread looks versatile...

If you want to mow alot of grass fast, the only answer is a zero turn. They are built for one purpose. I doinked around for years with garden tractors. They did the job. 9 acres took about 9.5 hours. I bought a Gravely commercial zero turn and it instantly cut it down to 3.5 hours, and it looks much better. Find a used commercial zero turn that's in good shape. You will be impressed.

Thats a decent mower we use one to mow 2.2 Acres of lawn at my moms house. It can handle the heavy stuff.

I have a Toro 48'' 18 HP that I cut about 1.75 acres of lawn. it's slow.

The zero turns are the best if you have alot of trees and fence lines. they are more money. It will be my next purchase Deere or Husqurvrna

We also use a 60'' woods finish mower on a 30 HP Kubota for the horse pastures.
It works great but is to hard on the lawn for regular use, no tight turns even in 2 wheel drive. Cuts an acre in 20 mins.

I have a 72" Woods belly finish mower on my old Ford 8N. I can mow 2-3 acres an hour of tall grass. The tractor is fully depreciated and will last another 65 years on top of the 65 years it already has. The deck is 1/4" solid steel. You won't find that at Home Depot. All purchased for 50% of your budget.

Speedy:)

If it doesn't stop raining soon I'll have to resort to one of these.

I love our Dixie Chopper, 50" cut. I mow 1.25 acres in about 45 min, with lots of obstacles.

It does a lot better on the smooth parts of the yard, there are some bumps that I have almost been thrown off.

x2

If you use the 4 wheeler as a tractor and dont see the plow, PTO... get a dedicated lawn mower. I've spent many hours running a Xmark, no comparison.

My .02...take a look at what the pros in your area are using. Dixie Chopper, Xmark, Deere, etc. all make great pro-grade zero turns. I went with a local dealer who carried both Xmark and Scag, and the JD dealer I visited was 45 mins away. No DC dealer nearby, so Scag won out for me...a go-kart with blades :)!

A used Deere 400, 420, 430, or a 425, 445, 455.

I have about 1.5 acres to cut with some trees. I bought a Toro timecutter 50" cut ztr last year.
Paid less than $3k with mulch kit installed. 3 yr guarantee. Cuts the lawn like a barber. I couldn't be more pleased. I actually enjoy cutting the grass now. Wasn't the case when I used
a lawn tractor.
