Computer help please

Guys/gals,
I was online watching the NHL when I suddenly got all kinds of HDD and RAM errors. Now thhe system won't even boot up. It says RAM usage is way high and there are damaged sectors on the HD. Is it likely to be a HD crash or did I catch a virus?

TIA

slodave 05-21-2011 12:58 PM

At what point does it say RAM usage is too high and damaged sectors? Not a lot of info to go off of here.

flatbutt 05-21-2011 01:04 PM

when I try to restart the unit I get the messages. Autofix doesn't work.I'm running Vista.

slodave 05-21-2011 01:11 PM

So you get past the BIOS screen, Vista starts to load and then error messages? If you hit F8 you get to the Vista boot menu...

If this is the case, yes, probably HD related. Do you know how to burn an ISO image to CD?

flatbutt 05-21-2011 01:18 PM

not sure what the BIOS is. I get the welcome screen then it goes straight into the diagnostics screen, all kinds of critical errors. I'm on my laptop now, the prob is in my desktop. prolly coulldn't do the burn even if I knew how. RAM temp to high, unaccesible/unreadable sectors...Apollo 13 kinda stuff.

Any way you can post a pic of the screen? I'm having a hard time visualizing the screen. Thanks.

Are the fans spinning in the PC?

Scam. Virus, "Windows Restore" maybe. Gives all kinds of error messages. Google it or look here for the thread on google images.

Sure sounds like the google image scam. crap. is there anything I can do to clear it? I have an up to date AV but I can't get to it.

Bleeping computer Windows Vista Recovery

flatbutt 05-21-2011 01:59 PM

thanks Slodave, thanks Tim but how do I get the cleaning files onto my desktop if I cant get past the malware screen?

TimT 05-21-2011 02:18 PM

You might have to put the removal program on a usb stick, then start the machine in safe-mode, and run the removal tool in safe-mode..

Since you have two pcs it makes it easier to fix the infected one...

flatbutt 05-21-2011 02:54 PM

sigh...it didn't work. but I didn't run in safe mode. i put it on a usb stick, started the PC and executed it. but the malware is still there.

slodave 05-21-2011 03:22 PM

Did you actually run malwarebytes or just install it?

flatbutt 05-21-2011 06:01 PM

I had to run it all twice to sweep it clean, un-hide everything then I ran malwarebytes. my system is running but it still isn't quite right. the background is black and some windows files are missing. but i've had enough of IE, i want to switch to something other.

the help you guys provided was a great benefit!
