Styrofoam recycling ?

I've been holding onto this stuff in the hope of using it myself or finding a drop off.
Not happening. I recently sent alot of it to landfill :( but I don't know what else to do with it. What do you all do with it?

Packing material....kinda like regifting a fruitcake.

RWebb 05-22-2011 09:32 AM

they recycle it here but only about 1x/yr

you can dissolve for fun, or use as packing as per above

flatbutt 05-22-2011 09:37 AM

I do use it X times as I can but it is piling up in my basement. It is fun to dissolve it in acetone, the volume reduction is amazing. But then I'd need to allow the acetone to evaporate.

have to landfill it then - you called city/county & no disposal option re recycling?

sammyg2 05-22-2011 12:19 PM

Most plastics that are recycled end up in the landfill anyway, just throw it away and eliminate the middleman (gubmint).

The acetone evaporating would pollute the environment a gazillion times as much as you would save by trying to recycle some cups.

The Starch packing peanuts are edible. Good with Ranch dip! :D

I did, no options here. Landfill it is. Apologies to my grandchildren.

Look for small companies that ship stuff!

There's a furniture store next to my Warehouse. I need to walk over to them and ask them to save it for me.

If anyone wants to dump packing material in Cerritos area, let me know!

RWebb 05-22-2011 02:08 PM

if you lived in the city, I'd tell you toss it in the general direction of NJ, but...

Hugh R 05-22-2011 04:42 PM

Jim, if you want say a couple of hundred yards of Class A (non-combustible) styrofoam, I could probably arrange for you to pick it up for free after we strike one of our features.

I used it to insulate the attic of my garage. Broke up the larger pieces and covered it with cellulose to even out the R value.

Tell me about the size of the pieces!

Hugh R 05-23-2011 07:17 PM

8' x 10' x 4' IIRC

Here in our town it's not acceptable in the recycling barrels. Have to put it in the brown general trash barrels. Bummer.

Robert Adams 05-24-2011 07:10 AM

A neighborhood church actually collects it. Not sure how I would go about finding those sources (other churches), but I'll see if they can tell me who does the actual pick up and maybe they can supply other possible pick up locations here in NJ.
Stay tuned, may take a me couple days!
