So the ball and chain and I are going to a surf movie...can't find the spot. Listen to the phone to turn right across 2 lanes. Pulled over... Officer sez I'm pulled over for illegal lane change...(TOTALLY MY FAULT)......,no front plate and limo tint (illegal in the Cali)...again guilty on all counts. 15 min later he comes back w/tint only. He says the F-430 wouldn't look good w/ a front lic. plate. I tell him he has my vote for "employee of the month"...If I could read his name on the ticket...I'd call him out. Good peeps! Thx Bro!!!

The only ticket I ever got (that stuck) in my 993 was for no front plate too. Best $80 I ever spent.

You can get the tint ticket thrown out with a doctor's (optometrist's) note saying it's recommended due to sensitivity to light. A guy I used to work with did exactly that and got it dismissed in CA.

I have the original German plate on the front of my 993. Never been questioned about it strangely. We have the front plate law here too.

I support the tint laws. You want anonymity, hire a limo. If I were a LEO, I'd be real concerned about tint. Even with the driver's window rolled down completely, there's not enough view of the interior.

But what my most important objection to dark tint is stems from having to follow a blacked out car. Not a low F 430, but any SUV that I might be behind prevents me from seeing ahead. You all know out on the track you are looking as far ahead as possible. With turns and elevation, it's easy. On the highway, it's not. I stay back far enough, but I'd still like fair warning if someone is about to nail the brakes because they were asleep at the wheel.

I need to see 2-3 cars ahead to be comfortable.

So we should base our life choices on the ability for Big Brother to know our activities?

So it's legal to have a cargo van with NO windows (zero light transmission) to the rear or rear sides, but you're worried about dark tint?

99.99% of the population doesn't pose any threat to law enforcement, so why should you or I have to put up with the dangers of glare while driving -- much more dangerous overall.

Better not follow any cargo vans, tall trucks/SUVs, 18 wheelers, garbage trucks, city buses, pickups with stuff in the back (ya know, actually doing work) or any other number of vehicles with LEGAL blocked rear views.

Tint laws are mostly B.S.

Generally speaking, I tint every vehicle I own/drive but never limo tint. Looks ghetto and completely unnecessary, IMO. Medium tint makes my backpack nearly impossible to see on the floor when parked in bright sunshine and cuts the glare to almost nothing. Especially w/ a black interior but even with a light one. Black interior+tint and black backpack/bags has been my recipe for years w/ no break-ins.

One key is to use the highest quality film and have a good installer. Limo tint is just begging to get fked with and pulled-over. Plus no one can ever see if you are making eye contact at 4-way intersections, etc... Really dangerous. JMHO of course.

Tint is legal in Washington State, but what we don't have is Sun. Nevertheless, folks have figured out that with dark tint, they can use the HOV lanes any time they want.

Tint is a must in AZ. The sun is relentless here, just brutal. Wifey just got a new car this weekend and I'm hoping to have it tinted tomorrow.

I knew my position would not be popular. It's only my position. Obviously the CA laws are largely ignored.

I do avoid following vans and trucks, that's just smart driving (although a big truck is less likely to pull a panic stop that might collect me no matter how far back I am). But with manufacturers installing dark glass in the big greenhouse vehicles, it becomes more difficult to not be behind one.

Denis makes a good point about eye contact. Or at least being able to see if they are alert.

Now to be sure, all windows behind the driver's line of sight can be black or not there as Eric mentions with a cargo van. But the windshield and A pillar windows should not be tinted beyond what the factory installs. Where does most of the "glare" come from? That argument is w/o merit.

AFAIK in CA you can have the rear windows blocked out... Just the 'front 2' windows and windshield must remain unblocked.

Many people choose not to abide by it... When I lived in Yucca Valley/high desert, no cop would bat an eye at tinted windows.

I haven't seen any tickets for it down here in OC either, and there are plenty of SUVs and non-limo cars with full-dark tint front and rear.

My MB still has the tint on the sides & rear from CA. Nobody has said "boo" about it. Of course it's more of a smoke than a limo/black tint, I got it mostly to protect the interior and had a quality install done. Probably one of the reasons the popo doesn't care - since it looks reasonably stock and doesn't give the appearance of the car being involved in ilicit activity or anything.

Now if you're driving around in a pimped-out rig with chrome wheels and some kind of stupid rear window graphics with limo tint all the way around, you're asking for trouble. And honestly I think that's the intent of tint laws - to empower the popo with another tool to go after "certain elements of society" with "probable cause".

If I were gonna' deal drugs or whatever, I'd drive a normal, non-descript car without any tint or out-of-the-ordinary characteristics. Plain vanilla like a Toyota Camry or something...

And it's funny to note that a "trend" at the car shows is dead clear glass in older customs and rods. I don't think it's all that easy to find in other than flat safety glass.

This is my main objection to tinted front windows.

Glare comes from the front side windows, typically. If it comes from the front, that's why cars (BY LAW) have sun visors (that cut down on visibility -- gasp!), OR you can wear sunglasses (TINT!)

When it comes from the sides, your visors may not cover it and your sunglasses may not be effective either.

Eye contact in So Cal??? Seriously?? Everyone is wearing sunglasses that make it a non-issue.

And almost no one tints their windwshield, so that arguement is without merit as well. We're talking about the front side windows.
