Something to do with vibrations? Beer bottle looks to be suspended in a way to absorb them.

The science is settled !!!!!

According to our computer modeling, the force required to shatter this bottle is .00017 percent less than the energy required to shatter this exact bottle just 5000 years ago.
More indisputable, scientific evidence of man made global warming.

Finally an answer to the "Are brown beer bottles better than green beer bottles" debate, backed by scientific evidence.

Measuring the natural frequency of the glass bottle to calculate the critical harmonics?

EDIT darn, Mike beat me to it. sure looks like an accelerometer on that "hammer".

Remember that old game "Operation"? ...This is part of a new Milton Bradley game called "Wanking with the Parfessor" :D

Yeah, it's a hammer calibrated to determine the amount of force applied so the input is a known quantity. Me and another guy beat on a HEMTT one afternoon with a bigger version of one of those things. I also personally witnessed highly-paid NASA technicians pounding on an experimental aluminum-lithium external tank panel hanging from the ceiling of high bay by bungee cords with a similar hammer.

Exactly. Slodave got there first, IROC & sammy got even closer.

This is taken from a slide on dampening testing given at an SAE seminar. (I've been doing a bit of reading on dampening and sound absorption materials).

"dampening" or "damping" ?

meh, just a tech term. ..., you're not really a technical type anyway.
