Last 24 Hours of LeMons race was won by a Miata with a similar set-up.

Not only that, but it was the car's forth overall win.

Ghetto chargers can be made to work well...And last.
Looks are not important to everyone.

If I run a rabbit in LeMons, it will have a similar turbo setup, albeit a little neater...

Show of hands, how many of us have built a custom turbocharger system from scratch, installed it ourselves, and actually got it to work well?


I've done it a few times. Mine didn't use PVC, and didn't have a waste gate exhausting onto wires, and I can honestly say they were done a whole bunch better than that one.

But at least he's tried it and basically pulled it off.
He has a lot to learn but he's got a head start on most.

He needs to get a black storage bin of the apropriate size and pop rivet it to the hood, have to cut a rear facing hole, for airflow of course

The thing that makes a project look good is quality workmanship. Pride in craftsmanship always counts. If it looks like crap, it is.

Have to agree w/ this, and not just for automotive/mechanical projects. It's always fun to see young people with ingenuity and ambition but a sense of craftsmanship is a good thing as well. :cool:

Seen a guy one time that had an early 90's T-bird with a waste basket screwed to the hood to look like an intake. Laughed about that for awhile.

I've built a turbo system before and am currently building one for one of my 944s. The difference is I'm doing it correctly, taking my time and doing some research along the way - learning a thing or two too - there's always something new to be learned in such endeavors if one approaches them the right way with an open mind and a desire to apply knowledge rather than just "git er dun" attitude.

I suspect the only things this clown MIGHT learn are (1) how to destroy an alternator and/or start an underhood electrical fire, (2) how to melt PVC piping, (3) how to get your engine to puke internal components all over the freeway or (4) how to destroy a perfectly good (or at least only a running, semi-crappy) car

I agree more with Sammy on this one. Give him marks for trying and learning. And there are few things I enjoy more than a brilliant solution that looks like crap but works perfectly. Some of my vehicles are a good example. Looks are secondary to me.

Perhaps that is the problem with the youth of today. Accolades for trying when the try is a failure.
No score in little league, New Math where the effort is rewarded instead of the correct answer.
If you build an understanding about the way things are done with less tan stellar basics at what point do you start doing it right? Garbage in garbage out is true in fabrication as well as computing.

A professional engine builder did this. Which of you would say that, how it looks doesn't matter?

Give him marks for trying and learning. Is it great? No, it isn't. Would you suggest his time was better spent playing Call Of Duty online? That is likely what his buddies were up to. He tried something, therefore he he learned something. I didn't say I would give him an A+, or even a passing grade, but he certainly earned some kudos for trying. My guess is he had a limited budget and did this in a garage with very few tools.

And I will add that there is a difference between a 'do-it-yourself' fix and paying a professional. But to propose that an ugly effective solution is crap is a personal opinion, not a valid societal ethos. To each his own.

Have to disagree - do it right or don't bother doing it at all. There's no reason a first-time turbo-er can't build a decent install that isn't a grenade, looks and functionality-wise. It's called "good design" and is a direct reflection of one's study, scholarship, effort and craft (or lack thereof).

If you can't swim, stay outta the pool.
