What's a good walking shoe/cross trainer to buy?

Looking for something of good quality along the lines of New Balance withOUT the cantilevered sole. For one thing, the shoes look huge and for another, they are!

I catch the wide runner type soles on way too many things. I guess I'm always cutting the apex of the corner too close. I wear deck shoes about half the time, but need a more sturdy shoe that doesn't feel 6 inches wide.

Need a narrower shoe in a medium width, size 11.5 to 12 depending on the manuf'r. New Balance, for instance, runs short, so you need to order next size up. In a boot, I always get the 11.5.

Last thing, I hate shoes with intense colors, graphics, light displays and all the hip hop crap. Just a good old man's shoe to wear with jeans. I'd buy Piloti's, but I'm not sure about all day comfort and most of the Piloti styles are too noticeable for me.

Sorry, I got nothing... I swear by my NB's because I need double wides and I wear them at work.

I feel your pain... hard to find shoes that don't have neon blue/pink/orange/red on them.

I have a pair of pumas that I like. These have a narrow but fairly aggressive sole.

I hate those wide soles also... especially for driving.

Although it is expensive for a simple shoe. I would go with an Adidas or Asics if you want a normal looking shoe. Nike/New Balance have always had that weird sloping heel.

For me the insole makes the most difference. Superfeet are awesome.

Those Porsche design shoes are awesome, but 200 bucks is more than I will go. Besides, that's even one more reason I won't wear Piloti's. I'm the opposite of snob appeal. NO PD merchandise for me. You remember I have a Boxster, so you know everyone is laughing at me already.

Webb, fairly heavy pronation. Where do I go with that info? I thought NB was a good shoe for the overly pronated. I mean that's why the big cantilevered sole, right? I'm not gonna run in these.

I wear my Piloti's a lot, no problem with them all day. They are very comfortable in fact. I have a few styles and most are very subdued. I don't like the ones that draw attention.

Looking at their current line, the black DTM or the TIFOSI are the ones I would consider if I was looking for a pair right now. Although the charcoal TIFOSI is a little light in color for me. I would consider the denim Tamburello also.

otherwise, find a sales site that has a search engine and enter the pronation level (and usually your wt.) - see which shoes don't look too bulbous

Amazon will let you exchange items with no shipping charges - I wouldn't wear the shoes outside tho.

I have long skinny feet. Size 13 somewhere between a c and d width. I have been wearing asics running and cross training shoes since navy SAR school 12 years ago. They have an excellent selection and are very comfortable on my narrow feet.
Find a good shoe store, ask them to check out your stride. Are you neutral? Over-pronator or under-pronator? That will help you pick the best model for your foot type.

I wear New Balance walking shoes/cross trainers probably 75% of the time... the other 25% is in some Redwing steel toe work boots...

Since I have been buying shoes for myself for the past 35 years or so.. I know my size and width... so I am ok with buying online..

nike air max 2009 2010 0r 2011 are by far the best shoes i have ever put on my feet- they are up there at $160 but are just amazing-

Nike shoes are very poorly designed, particularly the running shoes. I am always surprised when people say they like them. Have yet to meet a really serious runner who liked them, maybe you are the first Saxen. Generally, they are not biomechanically sound.

Try a pair of volley ball shoes for driving.

I was thinking something more like this, pricey, you when you wear them out, send them back and get a like new pair for less than half price. You only wear shoes one pair at a time and you are a dude, get one pair of good ones.

I prefer running shoes for kicking around, the wide footprint of heel does not bother me. I annually get a few pair of Asics GT2150, or whatever they are up to now.

I wonder if Mephisto has an APMA discount

I have a pair of Vibram Five Fingers and I LOVE them! Best shoe I've ever worn. You just need about a week or two to allow your feet to adjust..



P.s. If you don't like being barefoot or walking/ running in a minimalist shoe then these probably aren't for you. But you can always try them out.

If they are to wear with jeans, not actually for gym or running, I would look at Rikers as a brand. They are incredibly light and well made. They cost a bit more than New Balance etc but are of good quality, plus they look good.

Looking good is VERY important, you never know when some woman or high school girl is checking you out.

+1 on these. I have a pair I've been wearing for a couple of months. We call them my "goofy shoes" because, well, let's face it, they look a bit goofy even in the conservative black. But you literally forget you have shoes on. I use them for every day wear, yoga, and running. Toss 'em in the washing machine once a week. Steve bought a pair and loves them. My aunt and mother are buying respective pairs today.

Not great driving shoes, they feel real weird on the pedals but otherwise, probably the best shoes I've ever owned. Except for my 4" purple suede pumps of course.
