What kind of bugs do I have?

These showed up all of a sudden yesterday. The plants are Pansies in a pot that my wife has to water every day. I presume they hatched on the plant. What the heck are they?

Cooties.
Definitely cooties.

I don't think so. I think those are baby assassin bugs.

I have them in my yard all of the time.

Run Glen......run.

masraum 06-08-2011 05:17 AM

Here's another possibility.

Those are zombie scout bugs.
Hope you have plenty of ammo saved up.

I was just guessing.

If they are assassin bugs, then they eat other bugs. If they are the bugs in the other link, then they eat tomatos.

Here's an older assassin bug. Have you seen these?

and here's what I'd call the adolescent

Here's a picture that I took of one in my yard eating a spider

We don't have any tomato plants.

Should I nuke em or ignore them?

We do have some rose bushes. I don't want them to hurt the roses.

masraum 06-08-2011 05:30 AM

I think you're probably good. I wouldn't worry about them, but I'd probably watch them. Sometimes it's hard to tell one bug from another when they are that young. As they get older, it'll be easier to tell for sure.

No idea about that bug, but we have been going through our yearly invasion of centipedes lately. It's been hot and dry, so I guess they are making their way in for water or a cool place to stay...

masraum 06-08-2011 06:41 AM

My mother had millipedes before she moved. Ugly and smelly when several die, but otherwise harmless. Centipedes are, I believe, poisonous. That sucks. I don't want scorpions, black widows or brown recluse either.

That is a big bug!

Is that something from your yard?

mikester 06-08-2011 07:17 AM

well, they are pretty creepy.

Hugh R 06-08-2011 07:48 AM

No, from the Island of Dominica, when we filmed Pirates 2.

wait... what? Nobody told me there would be centipedes around here!

UconnTim97 06-08-2011 09:41 AM

Have you tasted one yet? That should give you some more information.

masraum 06-08-2011 09:44 AM

large and plentiful but not a problem

http://www.eduwebs.org/bugs/images/milliped.jpg

not good.

Apparently, in the wild, these are known to hang from the ceilings of caves and snatch bats out of the air as they fly by.
