Call ATF and ask them if it's not considered a destructive device. And be sure to give them your real name.

Is it live or inert? Smoke? A live frag grenade would certainly be illegal.

I am pretty sure that a live frag is a major no no!

What type of grenade is it?
HE, smoke, flash-bank, tear gas, etc?

HE grenades are regulated by federal law.
Smoke grenades are allowed in most states.
Flash bangs and tear gas.... I dunno.

Are you sure it's live?
Is it a training grenade, or a dummy grenade?

******

Definition of "destructive device" from The Gun Control Act of 1968, Public Law 90-618:

(4) The term "destructive device" means--

(A) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas --

(i) bomb,

(ii) grenade,

(iii) rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces,

(iv) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than
one-quarter ounce,

(v) mine, or

(vi) device similar to any of the devices described in the
preceding clauses;

(B) any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell which
the Secretary finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable
for sporting purposes) by whatever name known which will, or which may
be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an
explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of
more than one-half inch in diameter; and

(C) any combination of parts either designed or intended for use in
converting any device into any destructive device described in
sub paragraph (A) or (B) and from which a destructive device may be
readily assembled.

********

If you have plenty of money and time, it is possible to get the appropriate federal licenses to own the grenade. Your state may not allow it though.

To possess a grenade without the licenses is a crime.

In addition to the law, there is the safety issue. How old is the grenade?
Some explosives destabilize as they age. I'm not sure about grenades. Some use TNT, others use RDX or a combination.

The military has a nice term for a grenade boo-boo: "unplanned detonation"

****

Finally, how well do you trust your source?
Could it be a set up?
Or could he be out to kill you?

Do you know what happens when you insert a smoke grenade fuse into an HE grenade?

Generally speaking (I see FL in your handle) it's not legal to have a live grenade here in FL.

Additionally, you must have seen all the news down here in FL regarding grenade incidents.

If this grenade is live, or if it is unknown, or if there is ANY doubt about it being live, your friend needs to call the authorities (non-emergency line) and explain the situation to them. They'll do what is necessary to take care of it. They're also very good at it down here because folks come across stuff of this type it seems with more frequency.

1979 930,

This could possibly be serious. Your friend needs to call the authorities IMMEDIATELY! Non-emergency line. Tell them the situation. Let them determine what is live/dangerous and what is not.

Nothing bad will happen to him since he found it and had no prior knowledge of it, if he calls NOW! The scenario as you explained it actually is happening more and more here in FL.

From the info you have posted, assuming the fuze was never changed for any reason, you likely have a Mk3 concussion grenade. The M206A2 fuze only came on the Mk3. A Mk3 should look like this:

See pages 5, 17 & 18 in Field Manual 23-30:
http://library.enlisted.info/field-manuals/series-2/FM23_30/3301CH.PDF

The MK3 offensive hand grenade is a concussion grenade designed to produce casualties during close combat while minimizing danger to friendly personnel. The grenade is also used for concussion effects in enclosed areas, for blasting, or for demolition tasks.
MK3 grenade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This type of grenade IS illegal to possess per federal law on explosive devices. (without proper licensing, etc - which I assume you do not have, or else you would not be asking) It contains 7 - 8 oz of TNT, has a 4-5 second fuze, and has a casualty radius of 2 to 7 meters depending on usage area.

9-70 should be the manufacture date.

Cashflyer,

Ok, point taken. I should have also suggested:

If 1979 930's friend is nervous about the police, he can certainly immediately call a lawyer who will then advise him accordingly.

But something should be done immediately. It's potentially not safe. Additionally his friend found "stuff". Thus who knows what else is there?

Feel free to call me a douche-nozzle, or a dick-head, flame me, etc. if my suggestions seems over-reacting. I would rather that occur than to have anyone get hurt, or his friend get into trouble holding onto or trying to sell items which could possibly be very dangerous or illegal to possess or sell/trade.

Nope... not gonna call you names. I just have no reason to trust that the average cop is going to help the guy, and pass up an easy collar. Either do this through an attorney, or he should stfu and get rid of it.

If it were me, I would go fishing.
