Travelling with spoons..

Going on a shooting trip in SD and will be travelling there (at least to IA) in the 944. Taking 3 rifles (which means the back seat needs to be down) and a bunch of ammo. All the rifles will be cased and locked with the bolts removed and stored separately. Will be staying overnight in Indianapolis, IN and meeting with the rest of my party in Des Moines, IA. My trip will take me through NC, VA, WV, OH, IN, IL(central) and IA. From my reading of the info on the NRA-ILA site, this should satisfy the law but thought I should ask the brain trust here as well.

Those are all gun-friendly states except IL. Yes, you'd be covered by the federal law, but plenty of states ignore that. See the one about the guy who missed his connection flight at Newark, collected his luggage for the hotel sray and went to jail for having a gun in NJ even for one night. Anyway, there's no reason a cop should be allowed to search your car. Know your rights or else you don't have any.

IL is rather unfriendly when it comes to spoons. Do not think they like forks or knives either. Keep everything covered while traversing that state and do nothing that would cause you to be pulled over.

Sounds like a fun trip!

I don't take scalps. I'm civilized like white man now, I shoot man in back.

Thanks for the feedback. IL is the state I am most worried about. But I am not even planning on stopping there. Everything will also be covered in the back.

Have been wanting to do this trip for a few years now. I just hope I am taking enough ammo. Apparently you use a lot shooting prairie dogs.

Firearm Owner's Frequently Asked Questions

Quote:
If a non-resident is coming to Illinois to hunt and would like to bring their firearm, how do they legally transport it?
Non- residents must be legally eligible to possess or acquire firearms and ammunition in their state of residence. It is recommended that, in order to be in compliance with all statutes, non-residents transport all firearms:

Unloaded, and
Enclosed in a case, and
Not immediately accessible or broken down in a nonfunctioning state.

Thanks krystar. Looks like I should be OK considering the rifles will be locked in a case, broken down (bolts removed) and unloaded. Also going to stick to the speed limit on this trip.
