Are men allowed to "giggle"?
Well I did today! I drove two 2011 vw gti's back to back. The first was the manual6, which I thought I would love. It Was fun, but I was a little disappointed. Didn't care for the clutch or shifting feel at all. Then I drove the dsg equipped car. I was giggling, too much fun! Instant shifts with the paddles, throttle slipping on down shifts. The sports mode was impressive as well. I know there are a few on here who own the 2.0 motor in various vehicle, anyone care to give a long term report ? I'm still smiling:)

I giggle while driving my 911 through the Santa Cruz Mountains all the time. I'd giggle in one of those VWs, too.

I put 176k on my Audi A3, 2.0T and DSG. Zero problems and hella fun to drive!

I was going to but it had enough juice for me, would have just gotten me in trouble. The APR flash takes it from 200 to 253hp, costs around $500.

How much does the dsg service run from the dealer?

imho chip mods are a mistake with that setup. The DSG has limits. I had the GTI w/DSG and found it to be a hoot at the track. In fact the auto in sport mode was damn near perfect - actually a bit better than me using the paddles.
I have a new TDI w/DSG. No paddles but I don't drive the diesel like that. It will jump from a stoplight if need be though. |

I liked that DSG, but it would do some weird 'feathering' thing at low speeds.

I just bought a Jetta Sport Wagon w/DSG (TDI). I have owned an '09 WRX wagon (fast, great seats, otherwise crappy interior), '06 A3 2.0 FWD 6-speed (great car with a few niggles), '07 GTI w/DSG. Of those the WRX was by far the fastest and more sure-footed, but the 2.0T engine in the GTI and A3 is no slouch and plenty for around town. I could never get the WRX really wound up anywhere but the track. The JSW is a totally different beast - I wanted an auto so my g/f could drive the car, wanted more room than the WRX/GTI/A3 had, and 40+mpg is a bonus along with 236 ft-lbs of torque.
imho the "perfect" car would be the A3 w/3.2 quattro (or 2.0 quattro if you can find one) and DSG as long as you don't need a huge amount of space. The DSG has some quirks on downshifting (my JSW will actually downshift when going down a long hill - kinda cool) but you get used to it. And it shifts faster than you can manually. The sport mode on the GTI was perfect at the track. And what's cool is when you use the paddles in manual mode and downshift it rev matches automatically. well, I had some reasoning behind the switches:
GTI - bought it after my moto accident as I couldn't drive the stick in my Subie wagon. A3 - bought if after my knee healed and I was ingrained on driving stick and wanted to keep practice for my 911 at the track. WRX - a little harder to rationalize. I found the seats in the A3 to be a little narrow through the shoulders so it wasn't as comfortable as I'd hope. Plus I wanted AWD and an interior I didn't have to worry as much about. JSW - wanted more room to carry gear as I'm constantly gigging so I leave my stuff in the back. Also wanted an auto so the g/f could drive the car. But I'll cop to the junkie thing too...we'll see how long the JSW lasts :D |
Only if high speed driving or something that falls under the domain of the BATFE are involved.

Drove another hot hatch today, Mazdaspeed3. It was a hoot also,I thought the manual was an improvement over the vw . Interior was a little extreme for my.taste. Very fun and I would wonder if it wouldn't be more reliable over time..

I love the MS6. It's a hoot to drive.
