Mercedes SLs

I know that there are a few fans of Mercedes SL models here so I took these pics at my friend's shop. (Independent MB repair). Enjoy.

Nice 280SL:

Even nicer 280SL:

Rare, (in the U.S. at least), ROW 1986 500SL:

Older Euro SLC, the small bumpers and euro lights are nice:

Thanks for posting that. My wife and I used to own a 450SL that we redid with Euro headlights & bumpers as well as an aluminum hood years ago.

By today's standards not much performance but it was lots of fun. We even had the obligatory sheepskins on the seats.

Yeah, they are not high-performance cars, just nice cruisers. Which can be the most enjoyable use of a motor vehicle, IMO.

I think that's Denis' 4x4.

280SL coupe is one of my favorite all time cars/designs.

When I was living in Redondo Beach, I came across two MB's for sale. They had to be bought 'together'. One was a '83 380SL and the other a '85 380SE. Both identical colors inside and out. They were 'like new'. The SL had every record since new, and had 308,000 miles on it. The SE had almost 200K. The price was right, so I bought them. Had them for 10 years before I sold them to flight attendant employees who still drive them both.

They had belonged to Mr. amd Mrs. Fletcher Jones Sr.

Yep, charged battery and added some trans fluid, away I went after 2 years of sitting. My Dad just leaves it in the garage w/ the top down for 2 years.

They are comfortable! Warm in the winter and cool in the summer (northern hemisphere). I still have them in my non air-conditioned '71 911.

At one time I had a real nice 250SL, but the Auto tranny sucks in these cars. Shifts are too hard and to cruse down the road at highway speed the motor is racing. The best one to get is the 280SL with the rare 5 speed.

Here's a more unfortunate SL, of the 190 variety.

Last week, I went to this female doc, conversation turned to old 911's and she sez: I have a 1960 Mer 190 SL, if I can't find anyone locally to work on it, I'm gonna have to sell it. I say "How much", she thinks 10K is fair. Says it runs, just needs a tune-up. Gonna go look at it soon, it's located about 1.5 hr away: (Like photo, not her car):

If it runs and drives, 10K is a steal. Even with the inevitable (for these cars) tinworm.

Those early SLs especially the 230SL \ 280SL are going to be huge money in the future...great investment.

There are so many R107s that it will take 20+years before their prices start going up, they are great driving cars especially in the Euro version or the 560SL.

I predict the Benz cars to buy now that can afford now that will be worth well over $50K in the future:

1) W124 500E
2) W201 190E 2.3 16Valve
3) W126 560SEC
4) W116 450SEL 6.9L

You'd be mad not to grab it at 10k... As long as it's in reasonable condition.
