Are you in good hands?

Here in North Carolina Allstate is dumping over 44,000 customers with homeowners policies if they don't have auto coverage with them. Knew there was a reason I never ever considered Allstate for anything. Are you in good hands?

American Family is playing games with my homeowners policy ever since we dropped their auto coverage.

if an insurance co. advertises on TV, you should stay away from it.

some states keep records of complaints and rate ins. co.s from best to worst

In Oregon, Allstate, Farmers and State Farm are all pretty low.

Amica is the highest rated ins. co. that a non-vet. can get on with.

Sounds to me like "bundling" of services which I believe is illegal.

According to NC insurance commissioner it's legal with 30 days notice.

And State Farm in NC doesn't like to pay for hail damage on roofs. The chief NC adjuster for State Farm was quoted in the Charlotte Observer last week saying in his opinion hail claims are often owners trying to get roof maintenance done by the insurance co. and the claims get denied. We have had some strong hail storms this spring so they're taking a page out of their hurricane storm damage claim book and denying claims. I know some people on my street that had this happen this spring with State Farm. These houses are less than ten years old so how much deferred maintenance can a 10 year roof have? Are they really "good neighbors"? I agree that Amica is best around here.

This happened to me after the Northridge earthquake. I was insured with 20th Century (of course now 21st Century) and received some substantial damage in the quake. Quake was January, policy was renewable in June. May comes along and I get a call from 20th "We are not renewing your homeowners policy because there are not 3 full-time firefighters in Fillmore", WTF! You signed me up knowing this, I never made a claim since I didn't have earthquake insurance, I now I have a damaged home that nobody will write a policy on, I'm screwed!.

She says "well, I'm not supposed to say anything but we have had to pay on numerous claims this year and 20th is getting out of the homeowners policies." Thanks for the info, all was just peachy when you were cashing our premium checks but now that you have to dish out some of the do-re-mi you guys are heading for the hills!

Well, like a good neighbor, State Farm was there. I explained to my friends agent (she held a lot of policies with him) my predicament and he came out and photographed the house with trees and shrubbery hiding any damage. He said "we can't write new home policies except with existing customers so we will have to start you with auto policies and 3 days later we'll write a homeowners. But if they do a drive by and see damage you're out of luck.

Well, they didn't drive by, we got our policy and are with them to this day. They really saved our a$$es. I'm sure with the tornadoes, flooding, rains, hail, etc. all insurance companies are reluctant to renew policies much less write new ones.
