Question Huntsville, AL

OK, I have been waaaaaay to busy with life to post this earlier (cows got out, someone left gate open (not us), fence is missing (don't know why/how), and the tie in we did to an old fence corner was not sufficient)...

This time never seemed as though it would arrive! I've been looking forward to it for 1/2 a year and now I'm living in it... One more step in my new(est) career.

I am in Huntsville, AL for the next two weeks. Anything neat to see? Haven't been here in about 43 years and I was too young to remember that! Besides looking for the old house, stables where my family rode, and NASA (I've been through Clear Lake as that was a few miles from where I grew up)

Are there any other suggestions? Anyone for drinks/dinner in the evenings?

Heading to Kentucky for the weekend (Doctoral Student is watching the farm and Wife will be joinging me!!!! ).

When you say NASA are you speaking of the Air/Space museum? That place is worth seeing.

I lived in Huntsville for 21 years (moved 3.5 years ago) and I don't have any real suggestions. The Space and Rocket Center is sort of a "must see", but it has really gone downhill over the years.

Crickets has good wings in Madison and Rosie's is excellent Mexican food.

Forgot about that. IMHO, the best barbeque place is called "Old Greenbriar" (to differentiate itself from the "New Greenbriar"). It's a hole in the wall in the midst of a bunch of cotton fields (and a gin), but the barbeque is awesome. Order a #4, no slaw, extra fries...

Unfortunately, Bobby's name seems to preclude my entrance..... But yep, dirty, rude, nasty, few if any paved roads, ramshackle houses, very little entertainment, no internet, phones are pay phones only, no indoor plumbing, the candles provided for my tent were made out of some slimy substance, but the straw bed was comfy for the bugs! (Hope that helps yall out!!!!! Have a safe journey, I'm enjoying the hospitality of DAU.)

Might be a weekend of joinging!!!! (Wonder what that is...)

Got directions to Rosie's but they were wrong. Trying again tonight after an internet lookup!

Old Greenbriar sounds like my kind of place. I'll have to look that one up!

Weekend in Kentucky for Mammoth Caves. Should be fun!

The billboards for Bobby's are better looking than the place. Just joking about that. The Corvette Museum is on the way to Mammoth Cave. There is a good resturant in downtown Athens, AL. Dinner only on Thur, Fri, Sat and I think Sunday. Old hardware store next store.

Something I thought of doing was going to the Grand Ol Opry. It is a live show, tickets are free. Tuesdays are the best time to go. Don't waste your money on the back lot tour. I'm no fan of country music but I think it would a nice experience. If I ever get back there, it is something I would like to do.

Rosie's (Rosie's Cantina is the actual name) is on University Drive just west of the mall (actually just west of Research Park Blvd) it is on the north side of University. It looks like a fancy place, but the food is really good.

To get to Old Greenbriar, take 565 west to the Greenbriar exit (just west of the airport) and go north on the little two-lane road (in between the cotton fields). You'll cross some railroad tracks and enter a little (and I mean little) community. When you come to the next interesection (County Road 10), the barbeque place is on the right. You can't miss it.

If you can't get out to Greenbriar, then Gibson's BBQ on S. Memorial Pky. is great as well. Get the pulled pork samdwiches and Brunswick stew.

I lived there from '59-'75, it's so funny when people refer to "the airport" (Carl T. Jones)...I remember the day we moved from the "old" airport out to Madison. Also funny when "the mall" does not refer to "THE Mall" on N. Memorial Pky. (where the "fountain" is still left.)

I HIGHLY suggest a stop at "Big Ed's Pizza close to the intersection of N. Mem. Pky and University...I hav e been known to drive 8 hours for one of those. Sadly, the Olde Towne beer is no longer available

Enjoy the stay, maybe take in the Burritt Museum on the top of Monte Sano moountain to enjoy a nice view of the city.

Lots of people did not like the Old or New Greenbriar.... I ended up north of town on US231 and went to a little shop inside a gas station on the left near Meridianville. Nice guy, related to Lou Rawls. Spent some time in there talking about smoking. He does the cornbread on the grill, smoked!!! I've made arrangements to go back on Tuesday and get some special smoked cornbread! Ate 1/2 a chicken as he did not have beef.

Rosie's was good! Nice waitress, people left me alone while I read and munched. I'd go back again!

Big Ed's Pizza is either Sunday or Monday!

Heading out to Kentucky later today. Wife is brining the 993 on a road trip (she misses road trips in the 993!!!!) and I'll meet her in the nasty car, least cost, rental unit.

Went to a little BBQ place north of downtown on US231 near Moresville? inside a gas station. Good food, nice people, excellent price!

Big Ed's last night, very good pizza, I definately recommend!!!! Saw a white conv 911 with a basket handle in the parking lot. No idea who was driving but there were several groups of people in there, place was FULL!!!! I was at a table with co-workers. They are here another week and will go back!

Great fun, passed course (had to show up this morning but still passed based upon test scores alone)! Back home to work on fences again!

Big Ed's Pizza....!!!

WOW!!!!.....Big Ed's Pizza sure does bring back some memories....I grew up in Huntsville and this was our pizza place of choice. I remember seeing Big Ed every time we went there and I wondered if he is still around...Back then, he drove a 70's something Caddy with an ELVIS license plate on the front...Brown with a white top if I recall correctly.....Loved that place when I was a kid!!!!

It's funny, but I lived in Huntsville for over 20 years and not only have I never eaten at Big Ed's Pizza, I'm not sure I've ever even heard of it. Where is it?

Its located at the intersection of North Memorial Parkway and University Avenue, down it a bit of a hole if I recall....It was a small stip mall and either the second or third business from the right end. When I was a kid, there was a skate shop/comic book shop next door.....It has been MANY years since I have been there, but I can assure you I will be going back next trip to Huntsville.

Greenbriar is for catfish. If you want BBQ you should drive to Athens and eat at Witt's. Also, while in Athens, you could have the best hamburger in the south at Dub's Burgers.

Craig, I think you are thinking of the original location back in the 60's Which was the SE corner of Oakwood and Pulaski Pike. ( in the L-shaped strip center that had the old Big Brothers grocery store)...after that place they were in the old Heart of Huntsville shopping center. now they are just south of University at n. Memorial parkway, just south of the old Shoney's.
