small engine mechanics
Can someone help me identify this part? Its on the carburator of my Ford lawn tractor,(YD16H) with a 16 HP B/S engine. Its appears to shut off the gas with a needle valve. It's not making contact and causing the starter to not engage. thanks Philip

Try to clean it first, or just give it a gentle wrap.

Unless it's wired dIf fervently than any of my engines a failed fuel solenoid will not keep the starter from cranking the engine. Look somewhere else.

That fuel solenoid has nothing to do with the starter circuit. It is designed to shut off the fuel when you turn off the key to prevent unburned fuel from being pumped into the hot muffler and backfiring as the weight of the flywheel causes the engine to continue to turn after being shut off.
On garden tractors there are a couple of safety switches that can cause the starter to not engage. most common is the brake pedal switch. or neutral switch depending on your model. Also if you have an electric PTO, the switch has to be in the off position. Look at the fuse to make sure it hasn't corroded, also look for rust on the back of the Ign.. switch. those are also common issues for no crank situations.

....this BBS is amazing...
I think I just learned why the starter on my 2014 Honda walk-behind only engages when it wants (rarely). Thank Bill S. Bill K

And make sure there isn't a switch under the seat that kills the engine when you get off the tractor....

I tested the fuel cutoff switch independently, and it works! It does not work when installed and you turn the key on. It must be wired when the solenoid is energized to crank the starter. I either have a bad key switch, or bad solenoid. I can jump the solenoid with a wrench, and start the engine with the brake and seat safety bypassed. Philip

BINGO !!! I had changed the fuse, and it was blown again! I cut out the fuse, and joined the wires, now it starts with the key. Now to find why the fuse.... Philip

If it's spinning but not engaging, then I'd say your starter is either loose (needing to be re-torqued to the block), or your solenoid is going out.

If the starter is not engaging as said, check any safety starter interrupt switches that may be equipped with.

If the starter is not spinning, then it's the safety interrupt.
If it's spinning, but not engaging, then you have a starter issue. |
