What's the best Hot Dog for grilling ?

Just want to check the collective brain trust for opinions, and to share grilling tips.

We are having a Hot Dog bar for my daughter's graduation party and we want to put out fixins that will cover the gamut of nationwide hot dogs (i.e. chicago, NYC, cleveland, etc). So far we will be putting out: chopped onions, chopped peppers, "Texas Pete", saurkraut, several different mustards & rolls, ketchup & catsup, cheese, several diffent types of hot dogs (whites, reds, red reds), onion sauce, etc.

It should be a lot of fun to see what people like.

We prefer Sabretts when we can get them, especially with their onion sauce. I always get one when we are in Atlantic City.

Just at a hot dog plant on Monday!

I like the Dietz & Watson New York Style and Applegate Farms but the best is prolly Hebrew National.

Best's. Really - that's the brand name I prefer.

They have a 'bun length' dog that comes in a package of 8. To match the # of hot dog buns sold in packages of 8.

Nathan's, but a bit on the salty side if you have high blood pressure. (that's kinda funny thinking about health and a hotdog in the same sentence)

anyone familiar w/ Stadium Mustard (Cleveland, OH). A must have for dogs and/or brats!

By far, my faves are ShopRites Black Forest. Nice slightly spicy taste to them.

Close second is Hebrew National, or Best's

I thought so as well until I went to my first plant. Nothing could be further from the truth. While they do use pretty much all trimmings azzholes and lips would only make up less than 1/10 or 1% if they were used which they are not.

The only thing a little strange is the meat paste they make. While it is a bit like a huge vat of raw, tan/grey meat loaf its sorta weird when it gets packed into the casing. Thats about as bad as it gets and if you ever been in a meat packing plant that is actually darn tame!

You would be very surprised at the actual quality of the meat and the cleanliness of the facilities.

I have no issues eating hot dogs after visiting several of these places.

Another vote for Nathan's Famous Dinner Franks, with Hebrew National a very close runner-up.

tip..whatever you decide to cook, use tongs and dont go stabbing them full of holes.

i also like that hot tub of beer and onions on the side to keep the cooked dogs hot and happy. you can alway pull one out, and set it over the coals for some extra charring..

buns are much better when steamed..altho i did have an auntie that took robust buns, butter them and toast them over coals. like a hotdog needs more fat..

Hebrew National bun length dogs are my fave. Hebrew National built a great reputation on natural casing hot dogs, but I haven't seen them in years. Those skinny little low fat wienies they make are awful, so don't just go with the brand name. Get the big, fat, long ones.
The bun is just as important as the wienie. I get mine from a local bakery. Off the shelf grocery store buns don't have the texture and taste to properly accompany a good hot dog.

We have a local brand in Ct "Hummels" that are hot dog heaven. I like their natural casing variety cooked well on the grill with Heinz Hot Dog relish. Yumm double yumm
