Do we drive what we like?

Do we drive what we like or only what we can afford? Lets be honest!

Luckily for me, both.

I slog through LA traffic in a 4-runner with 111K miles, an interior that my 5 year old son essentialy grew up (and threw up) in, and a 4-cylinder engine.

I believe you can answer your question now...

Well everybody knows I've been saving up for a Boxster. Those plastic back windows are soo new-tech / high-tech. But first I need to move away from this rut of a place the locals reffer to as "Poverty Rock." I'm getting close though. My skateboard collection is getting so old it falls in to the "old school" catagory. We're talk'n big bucks on ebay baby! Look out I'll be trading up REAL soon.

Aside: this thread would fit well in the "Hall of shame" along with popular hits such as :
"How many people here smoke? "
"Curious how many here are self-employed"
and my favorite . .

Thats the ticket, just wanted to liven up the place with a little attitude. This Cayenne thing is making me sick. I thought I would throw something up just as stupid. Who cares what porsche makes, as long as they make something you like. Obviously they need to increase revenue all together, as most corporations do to exist today. Dodge races, they sell minivans and vipers.

Well, I unfortunately drive what THE WIFE likes [aside from my company vehicle]. She always tells me how lucky I am to be driving a bus. (2000 Suburban 4x4 ). I hate it, she loves it. Can you say travelling billboard? It takes forever to get anywhere, anytime soon and she still can't park it without sending bystanders running for their lives. So I guess I can honestly say, I drive what she tells me too. And damn happy to do it, or so she tells me. Honestly, the chevy was a good deal and tows great, but is for sale, now she wants a BMW. I personally want an Audi. What to do, what to do. (or I could lose the wife and get another 911 hmmmmmm.........)

THANK GOD I HAVE THE 911 TO KEEP MY SANITY. AT LEAST IT'S FUN TO DRIVE AND I KNOW MY PLACE IS IN THE GARAGE WITH MY OTHER BABY.

Boy you guys don't always play nice...

Now to answer the original question - I am lucky enough to work from home most days, so when I drive it is for my pleasure. Always wanted a Porsche and am still glowing from finding my baby in cabriolet form.

Can I afford her? Well not sure yet. So far nothing major wrong and what minor problems there have been I can fix myself. But the annual tune up cost on a Turbo is supposed to be fierce. More than the cost of maintenance on a 993 I am told. And the parts alone seem to be made from gold.

But the joy of what I have currently outweighs my financial trepidation. At least so far...

I drive what I can afford & what I love. My car may not be the concourse cream puff she was back in 78. But I own her outright, and love her to death, and she runs like a champ, even with her battle scared paint!

Maybe I should have been a little bit clearer in my question! My point really is, is there another car we wish we had, or is your car the one you are driving until you can get it. Or is the car you always wanted. Like I would like a 2002 911 Targa, but I cant afford one. Some people prefer the more synical side of things I suppose.

Matt? BRAVO! Our new friend who lives in the area of the Ted Kennedy skool of driving? Well, maybe he doesn't get it. Do we wish to teach him? Or not....

"Afford" is an interesting word. It means vastly different things to different people. For some people afford means to be able to make the minimum monthly payment.

For others afford is more a mental excercise of justification. Personally, I'd like a 993. It's a lot easier to justify the Carrera.

I'm with you LeeH, the issue is more can I justify the new 2.7L MFI engine when I have a 2.4 with not too many miles on it.

BBP if money were no object my weekender would be a 73rs.

I probably could afford a more expensive car, but I honestly do love the car I have now. At one point I thought of the car as "what I'll drive until I can trade up to a 993", but now it is "what I'll drive until I can afford to own both this car AND my 993"

Play nice kids
