Oh, jeeze - I was living in Reno, working for Autoweek, during those years. Drove out to take a look at it - wife in the car, daylight hours, never been inside - just to see what was what. An eerie and dangerous place, it looked like a prison, surrounded by tall fences topped with barbed wire, guard towers on the corners. Think Stalag 17. Poor Oscar Bonavana, I think his name was, a boxer, fell "in love" with the wife of owner Joe Conforte and was shot to death by one of the guards when he insisted upon a visit with her. Or something like that. Conforte, who I think the feds eventually busted on a tax rap, also owned a place in Virginia City called "The Cabin in the Sky," not a brothel but a straight restaurant. And yes, IIRC, the feds did actually run the Ranch for a while and couldn't seem to make a go of it. Odd, that. Very odd. You'd think that that would be one business you couldn't f... er, screw up.
