So the plane that lost a chunk of wing landed ok? Wonder what went wrong with the plane that was hit. Looked like he recovered after the impact.

The area behind the radiator scoop ( under and behind the roundel ) has the tailwheel controls, the rudder cables and the elevator control rod assemblies. He was able to control roll, flaps and engine, that's about it.

Not a Mustang ( Corsair ) but pretty close to the same setup. The cables are rudder ( pull-pull configuration) and the rod is elevator.

I have to believe that the Mustang pilot didnt wanna bail out unless he really couldnt have saved her though from the picture things dont look bad.
Still great the pilot got out and Bummer for Big Beautiful Doll

Pure speculation but I think the spring extends the rear wheel and tail hook if the hydraulics go away. They are compressed when the gear / hook is up.
