Most improbable comeback win ever?

I watched the USA - Brazil women's world cup match yesterday. I have rarely seen a sporting event as exciting. Wow. The USA was dead in the water. No chance. They hadn't scored since the 2nd minute of the game, and then they were into the 122nd minute with just seconds to go, then an equalizing goal out of nowhere. Then they win on PKs. Unbelievable.

So.. What other amazing escapes from the brink of elimination have you seen in sports? Of course, the Angel's comeback against the Giants in game 6 back in '01 - much to my dismay. And the other game 6 magic between the Mets and Sox. What else?

funny you should mention women, brazil, USA.

i just recently watched Brazil take back the momentum, and steal a win from USA women's beach volleyball. super heart breaking for me..i was yelling at my TV.

i love that walsh/may USA team..the olympics wont be a slam dunk anymore.

How improbable can a "comeback" really be when you are only down by 1 goal?

I think all time improbable comebacks have to involve more than one scoring event, situations where a team is down by a lot of points very late in the game and then have to have multiple things go right to win.

There have been a lot in football over the years.

In basketball, the recent Dallas win over Miami early in that series (game 2 or 3) where Dallas was down by 15 with something like 6 minutes left was a very improbable comeback (I think Miami could have won the game without even taking another shot, if they just dribbled around for 24 seconds and played a little defense), and that likely cost Miami the championship.

Red Sox 2004 ALCS games 4-7.

I was watching the soccer match, then f1, then soccer match, then indy car.

I loved yesterday.

Way to go ladies for an awesome win.

Two of my favorites:

1) The first is arguably one of the most miraculous. Philadelphia Flyers come back from down 3-0 in game 7 of the 2010 series after being down 3-0 in the series against the Boston Bruins.

2) Miracle in Michigan

Nothing can beat that one. Nothing. I have it all on VHS believe it or not too... That was simply crazy.

We have a US women's soccer team?

The other day the wife an I were playing euchre with some friends and we were down 9-0 and they were on the deal. We went loner/euch/loner to close it out.

ESPN has contacted us for 90 minute special on the event, I may get to play myself.

teenerted1 07-11-2011 01:29 PM

how do you get to 122 minute mark and score an equalizor goal if you havent scored in 120mins? soccer is only 90mins.

any sounders comback from behind win. they have had several this season. most happening in the last seconds of extra time. many from set plays.

Last weekend I was down 27 in cribbage with my dad dealing and needing only 4 points. I pegged 3 and had a 24 hand. My dad was crushed.

The Knicks / Pacers playoff game where Reggie Miller scored like 8 points in 8 seconds to win it was a great comeback.

Team USA over Russia in 1980 was pretty spectacular. I think the game before that they beat the Swedes?

I don't know about improbable, but I was at this 2010 game where the Suns beat the Grizzlies in double OT. I felt sorry for everyone who left 5 minutes early, but did appreciate being able to watch the ending from the expensive seat! This was our daughter's first NBA game - we had to explain that all games weren't this exciting.

Yes and they are better than the men's.

If the men were playing on Wednesday, they would be expected to choke after a big game. The women are expected to win it all.

It was tied 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation. So they played 30 minutes of overtime - no sudden death. Brazil scored early in overtime, making it 2-1. The clock never stops, but the referees adds "stoppage time", if the game stops due to an injury. Only the ref knows how much time is left. The clock just kept going past the 122 minute mark, and everyone was waiting for the game to end. Then... Goal!!! Less than a minute after the ensuing kickoff, the whistle finally blew, and it went to penalty kicks. It was better then euchre or even cribbage.

Your not going to get much soccer love on this board, but I'm a fan. I've seen many one goal soccer games that weren't even close. Having a daughter that plays, I really appreciate the talent they have. Also the skills the brazilians have.

I loved when Brazil took what I think is a medical time out? they brought out a stretcher, carefully place the player on the stretcher, and carried her to the sideline...

Where said player promptly jumped up off the stretcher and ran to her team mates..

It was an exciting finally

The best part is, the little stretcher fiasco was exactly what accounted for the 3 minutes of added time, sending the game past 120 minutes. The announcer called it poetic justice.
