“Enough!” Shouted the Viceroy. “The council demands proof Margrave Elkford. What have you to prove this deed was done besides a truly entertaining tale?”

“Sir, if I may summons two of my serfs to provide the proof council requires.” Elkford requested. The Viceroy motioned with his hand to allow. Upon Elkfords command, two men carried in a slab of granite the size of a lamb. It was oblong with rough corners cut. “Sir, if you please. The stone my men have has obtained from Richfield along the bank of the Timbergrass. Many of you have seen such and most likely considered it to be a merely worn from the currents but might I explain. Notice the etch marks on the top which stop one forth the way down. These marks were created by a cutting process which is now obsolete called Stingbolay. These are tell-tail marks used during the time of the great drought to cut stone. I can provide proof of a gallery of such artifacts. I contend that these rocks were built and placed to divert the river when it flowed true once more.” The council was silent. Count Richfield stared blankly.

The Viceroy examined the rock. "How do we know someone didn’t just dump the rocks there!” a voice cried out from the council. The Viceroy continued to pass his fingers over the edges, “Because sir, that would have not only taken work but reason. I am not sure how those toil in your manor but I have yet to meet a man that would move such stone to get rid of it.” The Viceroy explained. “But sir, surely we do not truly know the motivation in a mans heart do we sir?” Count Richfield begged. “Perhaps the rock was laid there without our understanding of reason? It seems perfectly feasible doesn’t it sir?” Richfield continued.

The council was silent. The Viceroy returned to his seat and sat down hands clasped over his stomach. “Sir, we have within our midst a situation which needs address. While it is obviously the opinion of this council that it stands better than a fair reason that what Margrave Elkford posts is indeed true. He has proved proof, reason and his accusations are founded on his fiber. If he had wished to take this on, his challenge would have been granted as purely domaine eminentae. The lack of response after evidence presented indicates to me that this council is indeed satisfied with the burden of proof. If there is anyone save Count Richfield who is of contention to this accusation be heard now.” Not a sound was muttered while Quackenbush gargled a snore. Underbreath chuckling ensued. The Viceroy looked to Quackenbush and shook his head.

“By the council belief and the land of honor, it is hereby noted that the border be re-assigned and lands granted once to Richfield manor within the disputed territory be now in the rightful ownership of Elkford manor.” And with the decree, the Viceroy slammed down the butt of his saber to further extend the crack in the table. Quackenbush rose to attention and shouted “By the Kings wish!” Laugher broke out as did the ale.

If this is your writing, I'm impressed. If it's not, who's the author?

M.D. Holloway 07-23-2011 09:06 AM

Thank you. It is a piece I am working on to get my son to read more. He isn't at all interested in anything but Popular Scoience and Popular Mechanics and even then its a struggle. He will read a sentence or two them start discussing the pic or what he read which is fine but he has to read more to improve.

He loves it when I read my book to him but sadly he is alseep within minutes! Maybe this will keep him interested. I have yet to try it out on him.

Mike, Have you tried phonics? Government schools no longer teach reading that way.

M.D. Holloway 07-23-2011 09:27 AM

He has dyslexia and yes, phonics work but he actually spells and reads everything phonetically which works when your texting but not so much any place else.

I have the afflication as well and really the only way to overcome it is constant presentation of words and learning various 'tricks'.

With regards to your son, have you read to him, or had him read the Percy Jackson series? It is supposed to be excellent (although I am not sure I agree) and its main character Percy, has a variety of learning disabilities. If your son is struggling, he may be able to relate.

On a different note, is this story going to continue?

M.D. Holloway 08-26-2011 11:06 AM

he has read some of that - he likes it.

As for the story...my agent has advised me to stop posting it. I am currently finishing up the story line and going back to add a bit more discription in order to bring the mind to a particular flavor of time. Tough balencing act - too much and it can send the reader into a fog and too little and the reader can be disoriented.

So, be on the look out in the months to come for "Elkford Manor - The Flight of the Starion"
