Anyone using a Tiguan for towing?

Last week at the Glen, there was a racer towing his rig (911+trailex) with a Town & Country minivan (!) and I got to thinking - how small could I go? I'm not a truck (or minivan) kind of person - so I'm looking for alternatives. The Tiguan is rated 2000lbs (US) or 2000kg (EURO)(4,409lbs) so I though it might be do-able.
Feedback either way would be appreciated.
My 85 is about 2,900lbs and I could get into a Trailex at around 850lbs.Thanks Bill K

I tow a lot...two big concerns: Transmission and braking.

If your route is relatively flat and easy, taking a trailer up to the rated limit is workable. Speed limits also play into the equation since a towing at limit can cause the tow vehicle to wiggle a bit.

Stopping is another issue. Remember, you've got to stop both the tow vehicle and the trailer. Trailer brakes are essential.

Good luck!

I'm looking out the window at Tiguan a few feet away in the parking lot. I'd say the only thing it'll tow is a little 4' x 8' trailer or a Sunfish.

I hear you - I think I'll kick it up a notch to the Touareg - there's a bunch of first generation, soccer-mom, one-owner's, out there with less than 40,000 on the clock.
The 4-5 tracks that I visit during the year all involve some serious hills - Sebring, not-so-much, once I get through VA. Bill K

Years ago there was a guy from GA or AL that would tow his 914 racer on an open trailer behind his 928. Thought that was cool.

I hear you too, there's a guy who tows his rig to Watkins Glen behind a vintage Vanagon. - you don't want to be behind him on any hills.

Or in front of him, ever.

Unless he has a 3.6 -6 in it.

Forget about the baby SUV's ... any mid size / large Euro sedan (BMW. Merc., Audi) could tow a 911 on a Trailex .... they do it all day long overseas.

i recently witnessed a man towing a ski boat with a ford FLEX. i was stunned.

personally, i like to "overkill" when it comes to towing. i almost went away permanently towing 3 ATV's behind a full sized bronco.

four month later update - I went with the Touareg (aka TowRig) - very pleased
the 6 cyl seem adaquate for my needs.
thanks for your input

If you tow you should have a transmission fluid temperature indicator.

there must be a way to drill down to it using Vag-Com - I will investigate
