WOW!
I'm usually pretty pro-cop, but that guy was WAY over the top. IMO, He has no business being a cop. The way he approached the whole situation was very bad. Honestly, the whole time I was thinking that it seems like he was hopped up on drugs or something. Thankfully, every cop that I've EVER dealt with has been 180° out from that guy. I've been pulled over plenty and they've all been good to great. I've never had to deal with police for anything other than moving violations.

This guy was walking down the street, so by law in his state he was not required to have ID, (i.e. Driver's license) nor give his full name or address. Obviously a stunt, but good for him and good for the cop for catching on. Stop and identify statutes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia FWIW, Arizona REQUIRES a state- or federal issued ID, unless you're an illegal immigrant.

Actually, they require it of illegals too, but the feds will sue in such cases and ICE will ignore the calls by the police to come take the illegal off their hands.

So you can walk down the street with a firearm and not be required to have ID or give your full name in some states? I believe in the right to bear arms, but for the most part I'm glad the fruits and nuts here in Los Angeles can't get a carry permit.

FWIW, in VA, per the law, you can walk down the street with cocked and locked 1911 on your hip and tell a cop to pound sand if he stops you and asks for ID. People have done this before just for the purpose of getting a settlement out of the cops and the last one I heard about got the guy $10k. I have done this in AZ once in a while, but no one cares about it and the only reason a cop would stop you then is to compliment you on your choice and maybe make gun smalltalk.

AFAIK, the Constitution still applies there and the DA there has instructed LAPD to harass lawful open-carries. Those tax dollars you love to part with will be paying for this lawsuit.

The dude is facing a few misdemeanor charges but from what I see it will be dropped. The PD is taking heat and treating it pretty seriously, they've even set up a FB page on this: https://www.facebook.com/notes/canton-police-department-ohio/dash-cam-video/207621069290829

I would think a good lawyer would be going after a review of every case in which this cop was involved and someone was convicted. I just can't believe this guy would ever be allowed to work as a cop again. But lots of cops will say he was just having a bad day.

Seems the officer has a bit of history.
"Harless, 45, an Ohio native and former Marine worked as a police officer in Virginia for four years before coming to Canton in 1996. During his career he has earned several commendations. One was from a Virginia judge, who praised the way Harless handled a situation involving a man with a gun, according to records in his city personnel file. Canton’s internal affairs unit has investigated 16 complaints involving Harless dating back to 2000. He was reprimanded in one 2003 case. Harless and another officer were exonerated of using excessive force, but were given a letter of reprimand for not activating the in-car video camera at the scene per department policy." seems to me that the cop is projecting blame for his making a huge mistake. he climbed into the backseat of an unsecured vehicle. once he realized he made a mistake that could have cost hi his life, he started blaming the driver for not securing the driver or allowing the driver to talk. his mistake, he should own up to it.

I suspect some agencies are telling their officers to do searches this way now, because once the subject is in cuffs and/or outside the car, anything the cop finds cannot be considered a threat to officer safety, per AZ v. Gant. It's really stupid and dangerous. Besides, if I were a bad guy and wanted to hurt a cop, I'd fess up right away to having a gun. And I'd have a second one I wouldn't tell the cop about, so once he had the first one in his possession, he'd be more at ease and think I was unarmed.

That is certainly not the way that the LAPD does traffic stops. FWIW, I think that they train other agencies in the proper way to conduct traffic stops. The cops in this video could have been killed, brought back to life and killed 2 more times before he got the gun off the driver.
![]() I agree that the main cop, (talker), was really bad at his job and talked a lot of schit. That said, he was completely right about the driver being an idiot and completely FOS about his actions that led to the stop. He was doing some sort of business with a whore and her pimp, (or some other lowlife), in the middle of the night in the bad part of town with his newly minted carry permit. This is someone who should not have a permit. He will almost certainly give other permit-holders a bad name sooner rather than later. I have no problem with him losing his permit over whatever misdemeanor sticks. Also, he should have spoken up sooner whether the cop told him to "shut-up" or not. What a fking moron. When someone has a CCL, things can go sideways in a hurry if they're doing anything shady and interface with police.

I just hand my permit over with my DL and keep my mouth shut. I don't want a cop to hear the word "gun" come from my mouth. If they ask, I'll tell them where it is, but otherwise, everything they need to know about me (and everything I'm required to tell them) is on the documents I hand them. But then we don't even need permits to carry in AZ, so all cops have to assume all drivers are armed. I've only been pulled over once in AZ and the cop didn't care at all that I had a gun my door pocket.
