Three Hikers Swept Over Vernal Falls

Idiots. I've been there - this was very stoopid. I heard they were tryin to get a good picture.

Must be some photo tho....

LATimes.com:
Three hikers who fell over a popular Yosemite waterfall are presumed dead, park officials said late Wednesday morning.

Hormiz David, 22, of Modesto, Ninos Yacoub, 27, of Turlock and Ramina Badal, 21, of Modesto were on a day trip to Yosemite National Park with friends and family Tuesday afternoon when they climbed over a metal guardrail at the top of Vernal Falls near Curry Village in Yosemite Valley, park officials said.

Witnesses told rangers that several people urged the group to get out of the cold, fast-moving water, but the three were swept over the 317-foot falls.

A search-and-rescue effort lasted until Wednesday morning. Park officials said teams would continue to scour the Merced River for the victims.

The trail leading up to the falls, the Mist Trail, has been reopened after it was closed during the initial search.

There have been six water-related deaths in Yosemite this year, including the latest incident, park officials said.

Two hikers drowned in the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir on June 29, and a hiker slipped and fell into the Merced River on the Mist Trail on May 13.

Officials said there were several recorded cases of visitors going over Vernal Falls and other waterfalls in the park.

Because of a larger-than-normal snowpack this winter, rivers and streams in Yosemite and Central California have been especially dangerous in recent months.

Park officials urged visitors to exercise caution when near the park’s waterways. Vernal Falls is one of the park’s most popular attractions, with about 1,500 visitors making the hike to the top of the waterfall each day.

Actually the ride down would be a blast!

It's the stop at the bottom that is not so good.

People do stupid things continually in places like that. Sometimes accidents happen through no faulty of their own. The sadist thing I saw was in 1968 when I was working in Sequoia Natl. Park. The previous winter had seen a lot of rain & snow. A family of 4 - father, mother, son (16), & daughter (7) were picnicking next to the Kawea River. The daughter slipped on a slanting rock that had water lapping up on it and algae had made it slippery. She went down the river. The father jumped in. He couldn't actually swim & was around 5'8" tall & 240 lbs. and he went down the river. Then the 16 year old son jumped in after the father and went down the river. That left the mother standing on shore. A telephone service man pulled the daughter out from an eddy down stream. We retrieved the son down stream in some rocks. At almost dark, we found the father caught in the limbs of a submerged tree farther down the river. Next day we got a call somebody else had gone down the river. While we were looking for him we got a call on our walkie talkies another person was in the water & coming our way. Unfortunately we couldn't get to him in time and he ended up parishing. We didn't find the guy we were inbitially looking for until the following September when some fishermen notified us of the remains. We had posted danger signs all over the place the day before and closed the place off that day. The same summer, a Sequoia tree fell on a lady causing her death. The soil was saturated from the prior winter, and the tree just fell down. She was setting at a picknick table with other family members when they heard the noise and saw the tree falling toward their picknick table. Everyone got up & ran in one direction except for this woman. She turned around and saw everyone had gone in the other direction and turned to try to run back to them and made it just right to be under the tree when it hit. Very sad.

Mother Nature is very much in charge up there. I imagine a LOT of damage from the heavy rain, and then heavy snowmelt up there. These three were being very foolish with their lives.

I read they were trying to coax their kids out to where they were when they got swept away.

Maybe SammyG can contribute some snarky comments about this incident too.

You can't sue because your family members were doing dumb ass things.

If you climb over a fence, you practically waived your rights to sue...At least that should be the rule.

Any idea why the flow of water increased so rapidly?

If I trespassed onto Area 51 (or wherever) and climbed over a fence where it says I will be shot on sight. Could my family sue? No. Because it was a dumb ass move and I clearly went over the fence and chose to ignore the danger.

They chose to climb over that fence and ignored the danger. Why should this be any different?

I really hate the lawyer/sue at all cost culture that we have here in the States.

As a side note, I'm pretty sure those guys knew they were done on the way down.
