Diecast Model Collection

So, I was thinking about collecting some Porsche diecast models and wanted to get some input on what kind of stuff I should buy, and how I should design my collection.

I really like 1/18 scale cars, but of course Porsche only makes 1/43 scale models--which means I must buy from another manfacturer.

It seems that autoart makes quality stuff, who else is really good quality but not over $150 a piece?

Also, what cars would you guys buy? I mean, do I start with the oldest and work my way into the newer models? Should I buy street cars first, and then go back and buy motorsport?

I think that I am going to buy cars that represent new model "releases" as they have occured ie:356 Nr.1, 1964 911, 1975 912--you get the picture?

Thoughts?

Do/buy whatever you want--it's your collection, not ours. You can get nice-looking stuff at a mall toy store for $15 if you're happy with that. But at the same time, you get what you pay for. There's a reason companies like Exoto, Autoart, etc charge a couple hundred dollars for their models. Starting off with Porsche-only sounds like a decent way to begin. Go for the cars you'd love to really have in your garage but can't afford (like a 917K or a Carrera GT), or cars of your childhood dreams.

Have a look on eBay and see what sort of stuff sells for what, them be armed with knowledge for when you see something in the bottom of a box at a garage sale. Of course it's unlikely the kid down the road will be dumping his scale 905 collection :(

Since there so many Porsche models available, I would suggest that you first personally decide on what type (street or race; classic or modern types) Porsches to collect. That way you would not end up with a collection of models that looks as if you have arbitrarily amassed with no focus. I have been collecting Porsche models for several years and I currently have a small collection of 140 1:43 scaled models, with main focus on podium finish classic racers, ducktailed 911, and a few modern street models.

Spark and Minichamps are good 1:43 modelers.

Autoart and minichamps seem to have the best selection and good detail. Exoto less selection. If you want a VERY detailed early 911 model check out CMC. All these in 1:18'

Exoto is the best for proportional accuracy. I don't collect but have a GT40 in 1/18th and it is amazing.

Yes, I have bought a lot of cars from Exoto and they have something for every price range, they have some outstanding models.

Simple......just collect them ALL!
I started when I was 7 years old and have run out of room. My collection is for sale.....
all 1000 of them....all Porsches

I know....there is no cure.
I used to be in the model car business. I also built models for EXOTO. About 25% of my collection are my hand-builts from over the years. It is time to liquidate some or all the models though.
If there is anything specific that you're looking for in pretty much any scale just let me know.

Pricey, but un-beleivable quality

Rob - NICE collection - you do NOT have a problem! Thanks for the photos - good luck with your down-sizing process. ;)

Thanks Bazza!

I'm working on the PMs I received for models.....

Jeff964 07-25-2011 06:31 AM

nice collection, Rob. Those UT models are worth a tidy sum now!

kach22i 07-25-2011 11:13 AM

Get the small ones, or you will end up needing a room like RKT.

The hoarding aspect of it can get ugly.

"Hoarding?" Going for Jerk of the Month, Kratch?

What is wrong with you? Can't resist trying to fcuk up a decent thread by corrupting a fellow poster's moniker and stupidly insulting him?

Maybe you missed post #15. It's still there.

If you don't think Kratch's mischaracterization of Rob's collection as hoarding is insulting, maybe you should begin to wonder just how clueless you really are.

Think about it when you are going to sleep tonight. It might keep you busy for awhile.

Are you saying Rob's clueless too? Read his response to kach in post #17:

Get a life and learn some manners or trundle back over to PARF.

RKT - most impressive collection, can't imagine what it's worth!

That came in while I was typing. Rob's just being polite. Kratch's post was indeed insulting.

Get over yourself, DAR.

I'm not easily insulted!
In fact now that we have downsized to a smaller house there is NO room for the collection. It's all boxed and stacked in a "spare" bedroom.....so in a way it looks like a hoard!
I'd love to sell the entire collection complete to one person. I collected Porsche models for over 50 years to this result. No kids to leave it to, and if there were kids they would probably not appreciate them or the value. I've seen it at the LA Lit Meet.....Dad died and the daughter bought a table and put his collection of 50s and 60s tinplate models for sale......for 5 bucks each.....she had no clue.
I'll sell a few individual models here, but will probably try breaking it up into mini collections like all the 917s and then all the 356s, 993s, 908s etc. One of the rarest models is the Porsche Factory Fire Truck purchased at the factory goodie store in the early 70s.....No idea of what it's worth. Also from the early 70s is the Super Champion 1/43rd scale 917s. They produced 18 different 917s. I've got all 18 in mint condition. They were considered toys back then and they were given to the kids and they played with them....and wrecked them. So all 18 in mint condition is very rare.
I'll quit rambling now.

As a sidenote, I had the good fortune to view Rob's collection with my own eyes in 2008. I had never seen anything like this before and was in total awe. So were my two boys who were with me. I could have spent a complete afternoon simply studying and looking at this magnificent collection.
Really hope it will find a good home.
