Cool science news
http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/184775/20110721/mutant-mouse-resistant-poison.htm A type of mouse, resistant to the rat poison wafarin, were discovered in a German bakery. Hope they don't spread. Better keep my cats. http://www.geekosystem.com/furthest-largest-water/ A cloud of water vapor, 140 trillion times the mass of our oceans, is in orbit around a distant quasar. Well, it was 12 billion years ago. perhaps it has turned into a star, lived, and burned out by now. http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/07/hints-of-a-light-higgs-in-lhc-data.ars Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider may have found evidence of the long theorized Higgs Boson particle, which is believed to cause other particles to have mass. |

my (limited) understanding of this is that after going thru the data they have excluded certain regions where the Higgs boson might exist, and that leaves only a limited region for it
if they don't (eventually?) find it in the, ah, "leftover regions" then that would indicate some "interesting issues" with the standard model. I'm not a physicist, and it wuz many kalpas of eons ago that I wuz a physics major. - maybe Mike can explain it - I'm not sure how many Hadron-o-philes are on this bbs... |
