What walking boots
I need a good pair of walking boots. I walk five to eight miles a day for work. The old dogs are barking at me by the end of the day.
I need something that can have water repellent put on to keep the dogs dry. I was thinking some kind of hiking boot. I thought I would ask here before making a mistake and not get good results. Any help would be great before spending the dead presidents. |
Look at Scarpa, Vasque, Asolo, etc. A good hiking boot will serve you well.

There was a comprehensive boot thread here earlier this year. Lots of great boots I had never heard of. Get ready to spend a lot of DP's.

The last few pairs of hiking boots I've bought were Asolo. The model I buy doesn't seem to need a break in period. I just bought a pair from REI a couple of months ago (probably my last pair ever) with the 20% discount coupon. Don't remember the model name, and it isn't on the boot. They cost around $170/$180 with the 20% discount, are leather, with gortex lining, and Vibram soles. On the front of the tongue is "Asolo & Lat. 45deg.48 min.53 sec.N/Long. 12 deg.13 min.3 sec. E." Don't know if that is specific to or designates that model or not. I put them on and went for a 9 mile hike in the mountains here & they felt like I'd had them forever.

I had some Montrails that I loved, but montrail quality is going down...
Marvs boots if I had to guess. Asolo Fugitive GTX Hiking Boots - Men's - Free Shipping at REI.com I have hiked with several guys that had those with no complaints. I have these.... Scarpa Barun GTX Hiking Boots - Men's - Free Shipping at REI.com Vasque and merrel are some more to look at. |
Go to your doc and get a prescription for orthotic shoe inserts. After running too many marathons I have arthritis in my feet. I could never find a shoe that didn't hurt. After getting the inserts I can use about any shoe. Mine are a foam thing formed to the shape of my foot with a carbon fiber plate under the front half.

also consider buying a few different pairs of shoes,
so you dont wear one pair every day, this will increase the life of the shoes that you buy |
Check out Dunham's.
They have a pretty good selection of light hikers and very good sizing options. |
Working and walking on movie sets up to 16 hours a day, a lot of guys wear and swear by these. I walk 5-7 miles a day on mostly concrete floors, it pays to spend a little extra....

Many years ago I wrote some computer software to help manage the Navy SEALs training and was impressed with their footware. Since they need some boots that hold up, when I needed some new hiking and range officer duty boots a few years ago I went with these guys. Navy SEAL Tactical & Military Boots - US Navy SEAL Store Footwear
The boots are still going strong after years of use and I don't spend a lot of time wading through the surf line but you never know...... |
Sid, thanks for the idea if checking on the REI site (duh). My boots are the Asolo TPS 520GV hiking boots. I threw my last pair away after 10+ years of hiking and using them as constuction boots at the end of their life. Everything was finally worn out.

Thanks to all. I ended up with Merrell and will give them a work out tomorrow.
Also ordered some timberland for the cooler weather. |
