Diverging Diamond intersection

I saw one of these in France and just figured it was the French being their weird selves. Now they've got one in Missouri!

'Diverging Diamond' Traffic Flow: Way Of The Future? : NPR

I don't see how this improves traffic flow. You may avoid left-hand turns, but only one direction of traffic can go at a time.

If they made the roads cross over and under they could eliminate the lights altogether.

they did exactly this at a dangerous intersection in farmington. but not until i was almost killed when i broadsided a car, riding a motorcycle, that was turning left when i had the green light. there were a LOT of accidents there.

two loops under the bridge and no lights or left turns needed.

If you didn't know what was going on, it could be confusing. I'm unsure who yields when the cars from both directions meet in the onramp. It does have the potential for left turn traffic to maintain a higher momentum prior to turning onto the interstate, higher entry speed will be a big plus for any slow accelerating vehicle - such as my well setup 944.

There was a discussion about this on the radio. I wish they had posted the whole interview and call-in show. The diverging diamond was referred as an affordable alternative to building elevated roads. The proponent of the system said it isn't the best solution but it was relatively inexpensive to build, making it possible to use it at more intersections.

from a computer science point of view, this intersection has great potential for deadlocking the road completely.

Drove through the one in St. Louis today as well as many other times. It is very nice. Not confusing. Seems to improve traffic flow.

I need a beer and a sit down and a look. Seems counter-intuitive, but sometimes that works, like fluids...

for each side.

Stop lights aren't 'green' ..esp when they're red.
