I would pay 10X for that car if it were available in the US. My commute would save my $$$ within a few years. Unfortunately the dopes at the DOT and EPA would never allow it. Sonso*****es think they can protect us better than we can ourselves.

Cheap, Economical and good looking... What's not to like?

I wonder how long it will be before cars like this are the norm?

I think the $600 part is an internet hoax. Here's a real story on the car from US News & World Report:

Did a little digging and found this. The car mentioned above was/is more or less a working mule. From what I have read there have been several body types and engine configurations since the one picture above. Excuse the unedited verbage, clearly translated by someone with limited knowledge of english..but you get most of the info.

As of JANUARY 2011

Volkswagen Unveils 313 MPG XL1 Car at 2011 Qatar Motor Show

"Volkswagen just unveiled a new car at the Qatar Motor Show that gets an astounding 100km for less than a lieter of diesel fuel – that’s the equivalent of 313 miles per gallon! The green car is an upgraded version of the VW L1 vehicle and it features an ultra-efficient diesel engine in addition to an electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery.

Continuing development of Volkswagen with the concept of super-efficient model that some time ago reportedly ready to be presented at the Qatar Motor Show, is now a German manufacturer has parted the veil of the model concept.

Models of this concept is now named VW XL1 Concept and was developed from model L1 Concept that was introduced in 2009 lalu. XL1 Concept comes with a front engine construction techniques in this era combined with the plug-in hybrid system is innovative.

So that makes the XL1, a super-efficient car with a fuel consumption level of 134 km / liter! And also has a very low emission levels, only 24 g / km. This model will be the main criterion assessed the development of efficient cars for the future.

800 cc engine powered compact 2-cylinder TDI common-rail diesel engine that produces power 47 hp electric motor connected to power so that in total 26 dk 74 dk generate power. Power was felt very fit with a super light weight, only 795 kg.

The combination of diesel engines with electric motors are combined with 7 speed DSG transmission is pinned between the two drive systems that.

Electric motor can work alone or concurrently with the diesel engine during acceleration. If the electric motors that work independently, so he could bring this efficient XL1 35 km before the diesel engine to help him.

To accelerate from 0-100 km / h it takes 11.9 seconds with a top speed of around 160 km / hour.

VW XL1 Concept exterior appearance is indeed inherited the L1 design concept that was born in 2009 and her sister, 1-Litre Concept in 2002. But has evolved with a series of feature completeness that has been developed. As a unique seating and a body made of super lightweight materials, but also very strong.

To prepare for this model into production lines and make this model very light weight, VW has patented the construction development of this model which is a new system for the manufacture of its chassis CFRP (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer).

The patented system is called RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) and will also be a reference when producing output models other VW in the future.

Light weight material than is produced by light, also supported the use of lightweight magnesium rims and the brake of the ceramic material. And suspension systems, steering and brake calipers are all of aluminum.

Not only superior in a very economical in fuel efficiency and emissions are very low, this model also has a design concept that will be a source of inspiration other production models. In addition, this design provides a low coefficient of drag of .186 Cd too.

Indeed, today the car is still a concept model. However, its presence signifies a new step for the birth of production models that will be highly efficient and more friendly to the environment. Plus new technologies such as RTM, which is a stepping stone to entering a new era of technology in making lightweight chassis.

This car is perfect and exactly what when issued today which where very intense, incessant preaching about the environment, and very supportive of our programs go-green, we often hear."

So much for the single seat car that was to sell for $600 in China..all hype but still a fasinating car and hope we see the real thing soon! Hummmm.. slightly reminiscent of an updated Delorean look..no??

Yeah, $600 doesn't even buy a decent lawn mover these days let a lone a commuter car; single seat or otherwise!
My guess by the time the VW management gets done with it the price will be closer to $16k. But then again maybe by the time VW actually gets it on the road a GTI may cost $40k so it's all relative I suppose. Not holding my breath, but sure would be a keeper for sure!

Fred, there is $600 worth of body skin on that. Which I would pay to mount on my own tube frame chassis.

For 600 you get a used Briggs and Straton go kart.

If we could get one of those into my garage, we could put Hooziers on it, transplant a 3.8L RSR engine and have some real fun.

Kind of reminds me of a concept car they couldn't sell anywhere due to crash regs. Guess they found a country that doesn't care!!

You mean this one?

I would love something like that. The new Morgan would be cool too.
