Missed jury duty

I realized halfway through work on friday that I was supposed to go.
What do I do? Will I get audited?!

I wouldn't worry about it, they probably just issued a warrant for you.

A coworker of mine did the same thing a few months back. He called and explained that he simply forgot about it and rescheduled for another date.

Good luck.

Federal or county?

I've known counties to be fairly forgiving, especially if you call them quickly, apologize, and offer to show up the next available day.

I've also heard horror stories at the federal level. I know a federal judge in Peoria starts the day by making a big show of personally calling any absentee jurors, demanding they appear immediately, and filling out warrants for anyone who declines his personal invitations. Then he starts the court's business. (IIRC, jurors are there for a minimum two week commitment, so he does this once every two weeks.)

Sort of, there are repercussions for not showing up or having out. I would call first thing Monday morning and let them know you forgot.

My grandmother died when she was 99 years old, which was 4 or 5 years ago... sorry Nan don't remember the exact year...

I live in the family home ( which I bought from her about 15 years ago), and I still get jury summonses for my grandmother..

Prior to her demise she had not lived at this address for about10 years...

Yet, without fail 2x/year a jury summons show up for my Granny... which I promptly toss in the trash..

I'm kind of secretly hoping they send some heavies to my house someday....looking for Nan... Because I will be happy to show them where she is now...

Laying right next to my grandfather in Pinelawn Cemetery...

The dysfunction in our system is inherent on so many levels...

An easy out to jury duty is showing prejudice... When in voir dire just my relationship to LEOs gets me tossed every time...

The dysfunction in this post is inherent. Next time you get the letter, write deceased across the address and place back in the mail. It will go back to the court and they will remove her name from the rolls. Or phone the Clerk of Court yourself. Otherwise, you can continue to waste your money (as a taxpayer) getting the notices and chucking them.

So what? It's only $.44 (or whatever a stamp costs)...

Worst case scenario....eventually, the rolls get so out of date someone thinks it's a great idea to build an elaborate system to cross reference every local directory....DMV, death notices, voter records, etc. etc. Think that's cheap?

Look, the system is a farce. Don't sweat it. Tgink about it, they send those notices through regular mail uncertified. Hence there is no proof you ever recieved the notice....

I thought jury lists came from registered voters.

Ummmmm BITE ME!!!!!

Granny died in the county she lived in, her death was recorded by the coroner of the county she lived and died in...

The dysfunction is that that people in one office on one floor of "city hall" have no idea, or inclination to share data with someone in another office on another floor.... or perhaps the office right next door...

Her death was recorded by the county coroner,

Where I live these records are all generated, recorded, archived in the same building..

That is dysfunction...

How does a deceased person remain in the jury pool for almost 15 years? no voting record in the last 15 years, she hasn't renewed her drivers license in the last 15 years... not made a bill payment, the pension from Con Ed stopped at her passing... a will was executed by the state...

She has not replied to a jury summons!!! and this is going on for years...

There was even a 3/4 page obit in the local paper,

The only people who try to get in touch with my granny is the courts....

The Feds, the State, the County, the Town, know she is gone...

Maybe the courts will catch on before I start pushing up daisies

First off - no worries - people forget all the time - what are they gonna do - arrest them all?

I wouldn't do anything. Let someone ring or write you (they usually send a letter spouting off a bunch of stuff about it being against the law to not report, etc, etc.)

Then, whenever that happens, simply ring or write them back (you will be instructed by the letter or phone call) and say you forgot - they will then re-schedule you.

Easy peasey mate!

Used to live in Ca, then moved to Arizona. Got called for jury duty in Ca and letter was forwarded to Arizona. I responded back that I now lived in Arizona so I would not be able to serve jury duty in Ca. A month later an arrest warrant was sent to my Arizona address.

When I had federal jury duty, not only did the judge send US Marshals out to arrest the no-shows, he didn't take ANY excuses for getting out of jury duty. One guy had just dropped his wife off for back surgery and she'd be bed-ridden for weeks with only him to help her. Too bad. That judge was a serious hard-ass and bragged about trying to get a law passed that made the governor eligible for jury duty.

Unless there is something which you know and I don't about this particular case (highly unlikely) those jurors did their job. That is, they concluded correctly that the prosecution FAILED TO PROVE BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT that "habitual liar psycho" was responsible in the death of her child.

The PROSECUTION FAILED in this case and they FAILED that innocent child who has no voice in the matter. Plain and simple.

The FACT is at the end of the day we don't know exactly how she died. I know everyone has a gut feeling and everyone wants to play quarterback. Well that's not enough. Even I have a strong distaste for the "habitual liar psycho", her "habitual liar psycho" father, and "habitual nut-job" mother. However even I can see clearly that the prosecution picked the wrong race to run in. They didn't have enough to prove their case.....
