NYS DEC road checkpoint??
I live in the Adirondacks of upstate NY. It's actually a state park area. Yesterday, returning from a trip I encountered Department of Environmental Conservation officers at a roadblock checkpoint, stopping all vehicles. Probably six DEC officers and four vehicles with light bars on as well as one NYS trooper car. They were stopping every car and asking if you had firewood, firearms or fireworks in the vehicle. I had none of the above but I did find it intriguing. I understand the request for firewood as we have an ash bore bug in the state and we need to keep it out of the park. Fireworks, we are having a very dry summer so guess they are concerned about forest fires as well but why ask about firearms. Is it just because it's easy to get someone to spill the beans and confess so they can search or what. Suppose firearms could be a fire risk as well but if it's a rifle or shotgun, no permit is needed and if it's a handgun, I'm assuming the individual would have the appropriate pistol permit. There is no special licensing for handguns in the park, requirements are the same as the rest of the state.
Just thought it was interesting they grouped the three together. Wonder how many suckers they got. Perhaps they were doing an open container check. I did have a Coca Cola open in the console.:D |
"Where are your papers"? Said in my best German accent...

Good to know.
May be over there next weekend.......I'll leave the cord wood home. If your not doing anything and are nearby come on along Green Mountain Region PCA |
Thanks for the invite. I will most likely pass. I'm down in the southern tier, low rent district.
That route should be a very nice Saturday drive. |
I've always wanted to tell them they can get a warrant if they want to search my car, but I've never been asked--or searched. I'm sure that if I answered each question with: "My vehicle contains nothing that I am not lawfully able to have" they might invent a strange smell or claim they thought they saw a weapon as grounds for a warrant.
The last checkpoint I got stopped at was in 2001. It was a sobriety checkpoint. The just wrote me a ticket for my window tinting. I fought it in court and, long story short, the judge threw it out because I was challenging the validity of the checkpoint and he didn't want to deal with it. |
what? no mention of firewater?

Side point ,,any P car runs happening around NYS? |
Our provincial Parks also doesn't want you to bring firewood, as we also have the ash bore bug, yet they want you to pay $8.00 for a bag with a half dozen green sticks of poplar.
It's a money grab for the park and not much of a incentive for people to comply with the restriction. |
officer safety is the usual reason (excuse) for asking about firearms
my advice is to stay off the Danzinger Bridge |
