Price check on tooth extraction, post implant and cap...

After having 3 root canals done last week, it appears I have to have one of them pulled and a post with cap is the best solution.

I'm being quoted $2800 for the extraction and a post installed. This covers sedation as well.

With a year dental max of $1500 and the post/cap not covered, I'm checking my optionss. With the 3 root canals and this, the $1500 is being blown out of the water I suspect.

What is the going rate to have extraction/post and cap done?

Did you re-run the scanner? What are the numbers below the bar code?

My enamal crown ran $1800.

Did you have a post implanted for your crown?

Just called around to four oral surgeons. Looks like $2800 is the going rate. I'll still need to fork over the cash for the crown as well ($700-800).

I've been lucky to have these couple of teeth for this long, but it might have been cheaper to get them replaced years ago...

Have you looked into a bridge? Less expensive, and less invasive.

A930Rocket 08-08-2011 01:05 PM

Yes, but the teeth on either side of it are damaged/root canaled (sp?) as well and don't make good candidates to bridge to.

Another 20 years and I'd let them pull them out and get dentures....

No, but what you need done was more than mine. One of my buddies just had his 4 lower front teeth extracted and posts installed. Implants will be put in later. I can check when he gets back from Spain next week.

Ahh. Now I get it.

I've got an appointment set up for Wed AM, so I'll bite the bullet and getit done. I wondered about going to Atlanta to see my folks and what it would cost there. Probably more trouble than it worth I'm sure.

Take a Mexican vacation, have it done there. Not something I'd do, but I know that one can get excellent work done at state-of-the-art facilities for a LOT less there if you know where to go. I'm in SOCAL and I know of several very wealthy MexAmerican families who do this.

I've heard of others that have gone to Costa Rica (IIRC) for the same. A vaction and dental work for less.

Do it in Costa Rica......

My mother had all sorts of work done while she was on vacation on Costa Rica a few years ago... replaced a bridge, some laminates, etc...

Was very inexpensive, and when she returned to the states, at her next routine appointment with her regular Dentist... she got a two thumbs up on the work that was done in Costa Rica..

My Aunt had some plastic surgery done at the same time, by all appearances that was an inexpensive success also...

Even better; and much less chance of coming home decapitated. :)

We just got a quote of $1800 to extract 4 wisdom teeth (16 year old daughter). Because they're impacted, the oral surgeon recommends anesthesia, so that adds $250 to the bill. Just got this estimate today, she's having it done on the 19th.

1 hour max for a good OS. Reminds me of a patient that went to an Oral Surgeon and complained how it cost a couple of hundred to have a tooth extracted and it only took him 10 minutes. I then asked if it took 2 hours, would he of been happier?

Four years ago I had six crowns installed in Mazatlan Mexico for $2,000--great service, US trained dentist and the whole lot was done in five days!

cjmurph 08-08-2011 05:34 PM

Just had a root canal and post. The bill is still on the kitchen counter. $1200 not including the needed crown that is scheduled next week. Ugh.

To do an extraction and a post you need two different operations often six months apart if the bone is iffy:

First the old tooth goes, I paid $800 here in NY, heavy, I know... but i got a bone-graft with that, it kinda smelled like bone marrow.. Yuck. Anyway six months later and I am ready for the post to go in and have a tooth made. Get the Swiss post NOTHING made in China PLEASE! Don't cheap out on the friggen post!

Israel and the US also make them. I have been to Switzerland. Switzerland wins!

Our 17 y/o daughter was born without a permanent tooth tooth under her baby tooth. She's been wearing a retainer since braces to keep all in position.

She needs a post and cap as well. Maybe the doc will give a 2 for 1 deal...
