Porsche Museum - how much time do I need?
I have occasion to be in Germany in Sept and could make a slight detour in our Itinerary to take in the Museum.
I'm not going to ask if it's worth the trip (duh) but could I get in and out in a couple of hours? The same goes for the Ferrari Museum too..... will be driving right through Modena, thought it might be worth a stop. Thanks in advance, Jon |

Havent seen the new one they built when the Cayenne came out, which is supposed to be much better than the old one, but the old one was great! Took me maybe an hour. I was the only person there. They even had a motorcycle with a 356 engine!

Yup. A couple of hours should do it.
The Ferrari museum on the other hand will take longer. Lots of good displays, and of course just down the road is the factory canteen that does the brilliant pasta lunches Schumi is addicted to. Also there are a number of great gear-head shops is Maranello selling rare automotive books, old Ferrari parts, toys and models, racing memorobilia etc. Very easy to spend a day in Maranello...and that doesn't include the factory tour, which is very difficult to get into unless you are a customer. And of course the test track is just down the road, and largely hidden from public view...except for a few spots that you need to find.

Three hours MAX. I did it last in under 20 min. because, when I called en route, they told me they closed at 7pm. When I got there at 5:45pm (traffic was AWFUL) and had just paid for my tickets, they told me I'd better hurry, since they close at 6pm. I don't even think they have anything there that wasn't in the old museum. It's just set up a lot nicer and spaced out more. The gift shop blows. I had already been there twice before when it was the old (free) museum. So, once I figured out it was all the same stuff as before, but just rearranged, I had no problem rushing through it. If you sign up for a factory tour, that's a different ballgame. And the huge dealership across the street is not to be missed.

Jon, the new Porsche museum is nice, but you really owe it to yourself to check out the Mercedes museum. If you go to both, for to the Porsche museum 1st, as the MB museum is much better. (although designed by the same group).

Thanks for all the replies!!! Sounds like maybe the "scene" in Italy might be more fun..... Can't do it all in one trip but the Italian stuff is an easier sell on the GF - she's half Italian!
I'll let you know how it turns out. |

I just got back. We tried to stay longer in the Porsche museum, but an hour max is really about it. I had more fun looking into the workshop through the glass than touring the museum.
The Mercedes museum is really good and much better than the Porsche one. We also did Autostadt for the VW brands, and it was pretty good as well for the oldtimer museum portion. Also did the Prototype museum up in Hamburg. Worth a look if you're in town or if they have a special exhibition. Very snotty people at this place. They Really didn't want my kids going into it, they are 13 and 17 yo boys. The 17 yo already has his own 912 that he's doing body work on, and the 13 yo has a ton of respect for the cars and knows all too well what to touch (nothing...). I won't be going back to this one.... Eric
