Is it a woman thing or a race thing?

So, I was walking towards my car in the Best Buy parking lot and the car next to me had a young (white) mom.

She sees me (asian) walking towards her direction and she immediately locks the doors. Now, I'm well groomed and dressed casually (I don't dress ghetto style like some of my younger peers).

Would she have done the same thing if I were white?

She better do the same thing towards white guys, because I hate racism and being a minority.

I'm a little bothered by it, because I don't think she would have locked the doors if I were white.

My vote is that it's a woman thing. I've seen it happen and I'm white. Kinda pervy but white.

Well, Im' a 6'4" big white guy, and I lock my car doors when I see anyone walking towards my car. I may be paranoid, but I don't trust ANYONE I don't know. Good story about home break-ins in Hou. A cute girl goes up and knocks on the door, person inside opens the door and WHAM, the cute girl's badazz boyfriend blows thru the door.

With all the weirdos in the world today I encourage my wife to lock the doors as soon as she's in the car, especially if someone is walking straight at her.
It's not a race thing it's a crazy M'efer thing.

It's a woman thing. I lock my doors every time I get in the car, no matter if there is someone around or not. Never hurts to be careful. I wouldn't be too concerned.

my guess is that it's a woman thing. She noticed a man walking towards her and locked the doors. Who knows, she may have a traumatic experience in her past that was perpetrated by a man. She could be especially nervous for that reason.

I think you could just be especially sensitive to the possibility of racism because of your experiences.

It's funny, I just never think about race on this board, even when Playa posts, but I know that we've got all sorts of folks from all over the place.

Would you want your wife to do the same thing if she saw you coming? Just kidding.
I wouldn't take offense. I have taught my daughter to do the same thing, no matter the race, or dress. Grab you favorite drink and chill.

IMO, you need a lot more to go on than that before playing the race card.

Happens to me all the time. Old-school clean-cut white guy. It's just the way of the world. I wonder if they sometimes feel embarrassed about doing that.

When I first read your message I laughed a little. My thought was wow, you mean that happens to races other than african american. I can't answer your question but some of the other post have been dead on. We live in a crazy world. It's best to be safe and lock those doors. On the other hand, as a 6'1", muscular, young looking black guy I've become use to doors locking, clutching of purses, crossing the street, leaving the elevator (this hasn't happened on the west coast), etc... It doesn't bother me any longer but it use to. By the way, I tell my wife to lock her doors and avoid going to cities like Oakland and Richmond. The bad thing is now thugs will travel to your nice neighborhood to rob you.

Considering this happened at a Best Buy she may have bought expensive stuff and did not want to make an easy target.

Woman thing. I am a mid thirties white male, wear a tie to work daily, have a super clean haircut and drive a minivan(company car). I get pissed weekly because I stop at a red light and the chick next me locks her doors after I look in her direction. Not looking AT her just looking around while waiting for light to change....

It's happened to me so many times that now when a woman drives up or parks by me I lock the doors, just for the look on their faces.

If you think you've got it unfair, being stereotyped with your yellow skin, how do you think the brown- and black-skinned dudes have it?

I'm a big white guy, tall and fit, clean cut-I get the same thing rather frequently, it used to bother me until I realized that maybe I look "dangerous". Now it just makes me smile...

I was coming home from work one night many years ago in my loud obnoxious beat up corvette. I see 4 young cute girls sitting next to their car, hood open, flashers on. I stop, and ask if they need any help., They ran for the car, locked the doors, and were screaming at me to leave them alone. I guess their parents taught them well, but honestly , my intentions were good.
At that time in my life, I was a young long hair, and was filthy dirty and greasy, so their reaction was easily understood.
