Lgb
LGB is my favorite. No longer produced right now. I have a couple of sets and lots of track with roadbed. I usually set it up around the perimeter of the front room around the holiday time. (Started around the tree and grew from there.) Have to brad nail the track down on the hardwood to keep it from moving. Holiday parties have taken their toll on some cars. I have to figure out how else to bring a LGB set out for the holidays. Just can't keep it on the floor-

I've been in model railroading since I was 10 yrs old. Small tracks here and there, but always nice senery. I built a layout when my two girls were younger and one helped me out a lot. When she was in high school, the boys would come over to the house and just loved the layout. I hope I instilled in them the great hobby that it is. Now, I just asked my wife if I could build a 4x8 layout in her sewing room and she said no problem. I've got lots of HO rolling stock and buildings, so this might be the year. It's such a great hobby for anyone looking to kill some time, build something, and have fun at the same time.

Im into G-scale I had tracks running through my yard. I recently pulled them up and am in the the process of re-laying them as soon as I redo my yard. Not a cheap hobby.:(
Also have a small N gage layout that i have been working on forever. My other hobby is the big trains. I volunteer at a tourist railroad here in NJ near my home. We rtun a narrow guage line and also are restoring a number of trains. The New Jersey Museum of Transportation, Inc. |

Which track (train) size is the most popular? When I was a kid I had a Tri-Ang trainset. I loved that trainset and the size it was. I'd quite like to build a new set without getting too excessive  but would like to start on a common track size so I can by bits on on-line auctions and not end up with a rare setup. And I don't want to get too fancy with sound, lights and switching.
Is HO and O the same size? |
HO is Half O, so no, not the same size.

I got this for Christmas in 1958 Tenshodo imported by PFM. HO scale.
I used to love logging layouts when I was a kid. Looking at my shop which was full of Porsche paraphernalia but is now nearly empty (24 X 36) I see a point to point lay-out around the walls with a trestle over the pellet stove.......hell of a winter (or 3) project for an old fart.. ..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1338001701.jpg |

On and off for the last 10 years I have been working on a layout in an 8 x 16 room in a corner of my garage. It seems to have morphed into a J shaped "dog-bone" layout with two tracks. Inside is 24" radius, outside is 30" (for passenger cars). Era is late 1950s around the time of change-over from steam to diesel with Canadian National rolling stock. (Trains of my youth.) I just started doing scenery when I stalled last time. Still have track to lay and hook up and am starting to get back to it this spring.

Thanks John and Tom.

Yes. Was passionate about it along with a huge HO layout that would make jaws drop.
Unfortunately it was demolished. |
Glad you liked it Porwolf.
I had a lot of fun making that video. Never thought I'd be able to take a ride on my own toy train, let alone share it with people I've never even met. |

Cool, and traveling through the land of the giants - did you see that big guy standing next to the tracks. |
Yes, I did see him!
I was just glad he didn't step on the trains! |

I stuck a toe in this pond this weekend. The Internet makes this entirely too easy and being fresh out of rolling stock makes it dangerous to the wallet. If I can pass on brass I may not need to hit the lotto.

My job is crushing right now, but I still make some progress every few months.
Panorama of my little HO layout. Front section is actually straight, photo distorts it. 2 outer mainlines run great, still finishing 3rd inner switching loop. I run Soo Line stock, mostly older Athearn blue box. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1530748101.jpg |

Another photo of my models. My N scale layout is modular and portable so I like to set parts of it up outside to take photos under natural light.

When the wife is away, the kitchen table will become a temporary layout.

Got my first brass engine today off ebay.
It's a 1968 4-8-4 c&o built by olympia from japan. My god- what a difference from the plastic engines (rivarossi) I have. It is so much better. I am absolutely amazed at the craftsmanship on this thing and that it was essentially soldered from scratch. Evidently, this brand of engine doesn't go for much money as some of the other brass makers because it isn't as dimensionally accurate, or as smooth running other makers, but this one is still a huge step up from what I was used to. I added some weight and it comes in at around two pounds, and can pull a 14 car consist with ease, just like the real 4-8-4 greenbriers. Before, I would have to double head two engines to get the same result. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545860369.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545860369.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545861283.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545860369.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1545861379.jpg |
Another pic-- can't stop looking at it.

Time to retire the closet layout.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549217277.JPG Moving on to bigger and better. The closet layout was 7x15 and you needed to get on a ladder to see anything. No stress of high $ trains falling to their death. 8x22 feet on new layout, you can see it, and no 7 foot drops off the tracks! This should be big enough to run full length passenger consists 13-14 feet long, and should get the engines off the kitchen table. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549217277.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549217590.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1549217590.JPG |
That looks like fun! Takes a lot of space, that's for sure. There's a Model RR club here in PDX, they bought an old house and filled the first floor and basement with a great layout. They open it up to the public at Christmas time.
You know who else likes Model RR's? Neil Young. He bought Lionel when they were close to going tits-up! Here's a great song he wrote that'll get your toes tapping. Love the scratchy guitar mimicking the sound of the wheels! (the rhythm of the rails!) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/21ph2y3EYNI" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
That looks awesome Leaky.
