Motorcycling thru Europe in the Early '50's - PICTURES

No, not me. I'm old, but not that old. I've been on these roads a few times and always wished it was on a m/c. Enjoy:

I made about this same trip on two wheels 15 years later... and this really reminds me of that journey. Great photos!

It had a hell of a lot less people to screw things up...

Loved the pics!

Joe, you have any pictures of your trip there on a m/c? The Alps are my Fav part of the world, all the way down into the Lake Region of Italy.

I've been fortunate to have had two bike trips in the Alps (last one in September).
Photos from motorcycle rides seem to have a theme, no matter what era.

In 1953, Europe was fresh off the Marshall Plan. Some of those towns are more or less "brand new."
See photo #5 of Le Touquet. The trees look freshly planted. Check out the cobblestone streets in Saverne... they're practically perfect. I'm thinking they probably didn't look that good in 1946.

I've been on most of those roads, though in a car. How did they ride with so little gear, especially up the Grossglockner Pass? When I was there, it was July and I nearly froze in the closed gondola.

That is too cool !

My Mom and Dad traveled all over Europe in a Morris Minor at that same time while stationed in Chateleroux France with the Air Force.
We have boxes of movies and slides - everything from My Dad hamming it up with his buds wearing a beret with a bottle of wine in Paris to bullfights in Spain to skiing in Zermat to the still wrecked Normandy Beaches and the ruins of Germany.

Back then in Europe the Dollar was wings.
