can this wheel be fixed
Is this worth fixing? Trashed? These wheels are really cool. 7x15 ATS with 4x130mm lug pattern for a stock 914. They are really, really lightweight. I have a complete set of 4 that are all solid and then I have this one that has been curbed and is cracked at the spoke. Should I fix it and keep it as a spare, or make a clock or wall ornament out of it? TIA.

Yes, most any alloy wheel can be repaired. I had the Centerlines on my race car repaired several times over the years and the wheel shop in El Cajon CA did a great job as the welded cracks, took out rim bumps and heat treated the whole thing. Finally it was polished so well that I had to get the others polished to match. In my case they were original to when the car started racing in 1975 and had a lot of sentimental value. I think the last time was about $250 to get the wheel fixed, $50 to get each polished.

I've seen wheels in much worse shape reconditioned by a pro.

Very cool. Thanks guys. I do like these wheels. I'll send this one off to a pro to be fixed and keep it as a spare.

I think they are aluminum. Is there an easy way to tell for sure? I guess a welder would be able to look at them and tell.

I don't have one handy to weigh but this wheel does not feel as light as a 15x7 Fuch.

Is there any difference in the ability to repair a wheel that is cast versus a wheel that is forged? By the way, magnesium is kind of blackish when it is exposed to air for any length of time. Think older 911 engine cases, or VW transaxles.
Just curious. angela
