Why do I have a truck..,,,

I have an awesome truck, in fact it's the only truck I'd ever own(except a hilux). 2007 Tacoma offroad trd, 4wd, locking diff, quad cab, manual 6, blah, blah, blah. I rarely pull my boat anymore, in fact the boat is for sale. If you take away the occasional home depot /garden shop run, the most that is ever in the back is my kayak, fishing rods, and golf clubs. Why do I put up with 17.5 mpg? What does it do that a gti or tdi golf ( or any hatch)couldn't?

is the truck paid off?

i have the same truck..one year older. i need it. hunting, fishing..yardwork. i would crap myself if i only owned a hatchback. i am getting an ave 19 mpg. best tankful, was 22, dodging speed traps thru AZ.

the very minute you get rid of it you'll complain that you wish you still had that truck. Its one of those things that you may not use all the time ...but when you need it you really need it.

Sell expensive truck. Buy beater truck for the occasional use. Use difference to buy a car you'll love.

I just paid 900 for a 89 ford ranger 4x4 just for the utility factor. we have a comuter car and (2) 912"s.

Truck is paid off. 99% of my fishing is in small streams out of the yak, too many arses on the lakes. 22 mpg, I wish.

Doing this exact thing has crossed my mind more than once.

So people don't cut you off all the time and think they own the road.

is your truck running bigger tires? 17mpg would get old quick.

i just drove FAST from the oregon border..75ish on the cruise control. i got 20.7. i am lifted 2", but running stock sized 4-season radials.

teenerted1 08-23-2011 12:50 PM

my dads basic ford ranger gets @27 combined
sounds like you might need to eliminate some options on your next rig.

265/75/16 bfg at. Do have an automatic? They reportedly get better mpg.

I will always own a truck even if I rarely drive it..... Present is an '02 Tundra that gets awful gas mileage, but when I need to haul something... I need it to haul something. :)

Okay guys, let's tell this fellow the truth.

You need a truck to run over things. Curbs, logs, those annoying children's toys that make noise. You know THINGS that need to be run over!

Sure, it's not as cool as that perfect apex, the sweet heel/toe shift, etc. But there is something so wonderfully satisfying about driving over the top of something...

Oh jeez... I think the PMS is kicking in. Might want to give me a little space at traffic lights in the next few days. ;)

The last 4 daily drivers I've had were pickemup trucks.
I can afford to drive a truck.
It's my money.
It's my decision.
I like driving a truck.

that's all ;)

We sold our Tacoma and regret it. Keep it....

Hendog 08-23-2011 02:00 PM

My '04 F150 with 5.4 triton does about 10 mpg. My wife drives it to/from work. I drive the Accord because I have twice as far to go. The two black labs go in the back when we take them somewhere; wouldn't want them inside the car of any sort.

Thought I'd pull a trailer when I bought the truck (used); haven't yet. Does yard work real well. Half the price of a Toyota of the same vintage: I can buy lots of gas for that difference considering the low mileage it sees. I love driving it the odd time that I do. I've considered getting a more efficient truck but I'll spend more $$ to get the relative same thing, so I just pour it in the tank instead.

Now if we put lots of miles on it, it would be a different thing, but one way or the other, with the yard and two dogs I'll always have a truck.

I have the best of both worlds, I borrow my brothers pickup when I need one. He lives three doors down from me.

oldschoollear 08-23-2011 02:05 PM

Starting to see a pattern develop. Maybe I should reword the question. why do I have such a nice truck, when I could have a beater truck and a fun car? :)
