my cat 5e cable is slower than ca 5 cable, funny?

I am re-running internet cables around my house today. The longest time I have been using is plug and unplugging between cat 5, cat 5e (same length), and cat cables and run speedtest.net over and over. The funny thing I found was my cat5 and cat6 carry the same speed, while the cat 5e make it so slow. Let say cat5 and cat6 are giving me between 15 mbps to 23 mbps right now, while the cat 5e only can giving me between 7mbps to 13 mbps. Isn't it weird? Defective cable? Well, my cat 5e happen to look superior made compare to my cat 5 cable.

It is possible. Stretch the copper wires inside and funny things start to happen.

slodave, you want me to replace the cable right?

Now, question for final dicision. I have 3 cables can be used for this room: 25f cat5, 25f cat5e, or 75f cat6? I think it should be 25f cat5e, but asking anyway

Get rid of the Cat5. It's outdated and won't handle gigabit speeds that well, if at all. It was never rated for it. The Cat5e could handle gigabit speeds, but not at the "copper" level. Cat6 was designed to handle full gigabit speeds.

How long is the Cat5e cable? If it seems bad, toss it and run another.

Yes, a bit more... Helps the internal network if you transfer large files around. Do what you want.. I'm replacing my clients cat5 cables when there are issues and all new runs are Cat6.
