Genos Cheesesteak Owner died

He should be remembered for 2 great things:
1) The world's best Philly Cheesesteak bar none.
2) He had the guts to say "No english, no cheesesteak".

A true hero. I've spent many drunken nights after Rush or Van Halen concerts at the Spectrum, stumbling between Pat's and Geno's for late night grub.

The best Cheesesteak and one of the nicest guys to talk will in person. I have family in Philly and one of the first things I do when I visit is to go downtown for a cheesesteak or just have one overnighted to CA from them!
I "loved" his sign and pride for the American language; and I hate our CA DMV for not having the same one on the wall!

IMO, the guy was a figment of the media on a very, very, very slow news day.

I live in Philadelphia, worked in South Philly and enjoy cheese steaks on a regular basis. I would not go out of my way one block for a free Geno's steak.

I have a very low tolerance for an idiot who created dissension and hate all he needed was a white hood and robe.....

Geno's wasn't the best. But he and Pat's were the best that were always open. During regular hours, I'd go for Apppetites Delight in Wayne, Chubby's or D'Alessandro's in Roxboro or Mama's in Bala Cynwyd. Late night - Pat's or Geno's. A few times I had one of each.

one of the things that impresses me the most about some people..their ability to speak multiple languages.

i have friends that can speak FIVE! when i worked at my mom's grocery store, most folks spoke spanish. instead of getting my panties wadded up about it..i looked at it as an opportunity to learn from them. now i can order food and cuss in spanish. WIN!

i bet the cheesesteak guy would wish back back all the time wasted worrying about the little stuff.

Well, he had a line down the sidewalk every time I was there. And his more famous neighbor and competitor, Pat's, also had a sign instructing you how to order and warning that you'd get to practice again from the end of the line if you didn't get it right the first time. It was like the Soup Nazi. Geno probably boosted his business with the "Order in English" sign. Pat's was a little more subtle, but rest assured, they'd have sent you to the end of the line if you didn't order in clear English with no hesitation. And they always had a line down the sidewalk too. That's how they roll.

On the topic of Philly food...the BEST hoagie I have ever had in my life is from the Ro Lynn Deli in Brookhaven just SW of Philly. Go there, get a Godfather Hoagie...thank me later.

No, get and extra and someone please send me one.

The cheese-steak king dies of a massive heart attack.

Can you say "karma"?

Both Troy's and Abner's by the Penn campus blow Geno's away.

I sure am glad that I haven't had to master all the languages of the foreign countries I've visited just to be allowed to get a meal. I guess Geno never heard of tourists.

I will go out of my way to support a business that supports The United States of America and has the guts to tell the PC world to go stuff it.

I thought of the irony in that but, remember that the nut who was a pioneer in the whole jogging and healthy eating stuff: Euell Gibbons also died of a heart attack. If I'm gonna go, I want it to be with a smile on my face and not a piece of low-fat trash broccoli stuck in between my teeth.

+1

I grew up not too far from both Pat's and Geno's and I can count on my right hand how many time I eat their sandwiches. It always amazed me how visitors to the city want to go "Pat's" or "Geno's" when they visit. Like Luke, I would not go out of my way one block for a free one. One of the most overrated things in Philly IMO.
Being a third generation Italian, as was Mr Vento I believe, I wonder why he didn't take this same stance with our grand parents? Many who struggled with the English language who I am sure ordered his overrated goods in broken English or their native Italian language. If you grew up "down town" like I did, you most likely know the answer to that question.

IMO, an extremely overrated story on a person who showed his ignorance but got his 15 minutes fame.

Because your parents and grandparents made an effort to speak 'our language'. I'm also 3rd generation, but when my grandparents came over, they immediately learned english, and made their children (my parents) speak only english.

I suppose if they hadn't, along with all of the other immigrants, we would have dozens of translations on packaging and signs, instead of just 2.
