F1 on Speed HD - wtf happened???
Out of town for my sister's wedding this weekend, set the pvr for qualifying and the race on Speed HD, go to watch them this morning and... nothing. Blank screen. WTF happened? (I'm in Canada, was it blacked out? I am p!ssed)

It's odd, but yes, sometimes the Speed TV coverage is blacked out - usually when the live coverage that is shown on TSN gets delayed or pre-empted until later in the day - I think it's some kind of exclusive license agreement that allows TSN to show the coverage first or at the same time - Speed TV can't be the first to show quali or race in Canada I think..
The more important question is why are you trying to watch the Speed TV coverage instead of the TSN broadcast which is the BBC production with Brundle and Coultard commentary ?!? :) AM |
yeah, blacked out in my area also, (PEI) I can only get it on TSN live. Speed broadcasts it later in the day and by that time someone would have ruined it for me by telling me how good or bad the race was. Maybe speed, like everything else in the USA is hurting. Seems not to many americans are into F1, too bad. Maybe the new Austin track will get some of them back. Hope so!

Got it on my DVR (Dish HD) ........ Fast Forward thru the 1st Hour of Bull$****.....

I have a DVD Recorder and when I try to record F1 I get a popup that says the program is Copy Protected. I had to drag out a VHS tape and record it on an old VCR (pre digital).

That is strange. We DVR the practice, qualifying & the race in full 1080 HD and watch it a a reasonable hour in the morning

My understanding is that each market ideally has a single broadcaster of F1 content.
For the US it is Speed, but in Canada it's TSN. The issue is that Speed is also picked up here by most cable networks. I think TSN complained a few years back that their exclusive agreement was being violated and now there is a black out of the Speed coverage. Further, the video feed is the same for all markets, but each broadcaster gets to provide their own commentary. I like Steve Machette on Speed, but if I have to hear David Hobbs pronounce Barrichello that early in the morning, it ruins my Sunday. Canada is small, so we poach the BBC programming with Martin Brundle and David Coulthard providing most of the commentary - just the way it should be :) |

Brundle and Coulthard rule, in fact last race I pvr'd on Speed HD was the HD feed with B+C commentary - best of both worlds. Beautiful HD pictures with intelligent commentary :D My error was thinking that it could happen that way twice, I guess. d. |

Aw come on, Hobbs and Machet are good guys.:)

and it was Spa you missed. Bummer. You may be able to see it a couple days later on Speed when they rebroadcast it. The only thing worse than missing a DVR is when someone says something like "how about that Hamilton win" when you had not seen it yet.
