RIP Honeyboy Edwards
Honeyboy Edwards death ends era of original Mississippi bluesmen - The National
I remember about 8 months ago at my work we had a long involved series of discussions about whether we could handle a month long trip with very involved travel plans, which included having a 96-year old and a 79-year old oxygen-bound man on a tour bus for a week at a time. Two days ago I realized we made the best decision ever. Thanks for the stories, buddy! ![]() This is about 2:30 AM, Honeyboy had just finished telling me (in detail) which kind of Orange soda was the best to mix with Sterno for a good drunk on the cheap. Canned Heat, baby. ![]() Honey and Hubert used to talk about friends they had in common back in the '40s. Crazy stuff. ![]() Here's the whole gang after the last show in Illinois ![]() Honeyboy and Hubert at Chicago Symphony Hall ![]() Honey teaching Lightnin' Malcolm a little something ![]() i'm just glad hubert is never gonna die

Thanks for sharing the pics and the stories Jeremy! I had dvr'd a doc on Honeyboy day before yesterday (Documentary channel) and watched it last night. It wasn't until they flashed his dates that I realized his passing. Keef, Robert Cray, Lucinda Williams and others comment on his influence along with a great glimpse into the Delta Blues way of life - highly recommended for blues lovers. RIP Honeyboy...
ps: I know you guys have a "blues cruise" coming up (I've been on 4 beginning back in '98). I wouldn't be caught dead on a regular cruise (although I've done a Jam Cruise too), and you're gonna have a blast ![]() |

• RIP, Honeyboy.
• 97 Years is a big life. • Jeremy, I know that a traveling minstrel's life isn't all it's cracked up to be, but it has some unbelievable perks. You are one lucky sumbuck. • We could all learn a little something about how to dress from Honeyboy.

You are very fortunate to have had that experience. The old guys are dropping like flies now and you have been bestowed with some great stories. You are now bound to pass them on. Another blues stringer gone home. The got a hell of a band going on up there. Someday you and I will be members.

So he wound up playin wid a bunch of white boyz on his last go around, pretendin that they undersatnd the Blues..that these lilly white Boyz would even care to step on stage wid a Black Man let alone think he is sumthin special. My OHH My...Will wonders never cease...
I think that the tour was something specail to the old boy, that someone would care to listen to what an old man had to play. That maybe he imparted a little some thing of himself to the younger generation, about how it was for him in his day. At the end of the tour he was tired and his work was finished as he had done all that he could and it was time to go home. Now Gogar U better pick up that fking stick and run with it..or that old mans time was wasted on you.

Jim O'Neal, probably the world's foremost blues historian, is battling cancer without insurance. There will be fundraising events in Chicago and in Kansas City, coming up soon. In case anybody's interested. Blues music might just be about the only truly American contribution to worldwide culture. Positive contribution, that is.
