Head Honcho gives us salary--yea right.
The superintendent of the Fresno Cal. school system has "given back" his $280,000 salary to the system because he said, "I just cant keep accumlinating all this money year in and year out". I'm going to "retire" to help out the school system. But wait, that's not all. Since he "retired" for 1 day, he gets his annual pension of $200,000 per year, and the salary of a first year teacher of $31,000.I wonder if he can get by on JUST $231,000 per year. So he told his supporters that he's helping out the system, giving back what he could. Free health care, free everything for life. GIVE ME A BREAK. The Sumbtch knew what he was doing, and he's not helping anyone out with his generosity. Anyone in California want to chime in on this s@@@.

He's donating the $31,000 to charity. He's geting the $200k whether he retires now or in 2015 when his term is up. He's not taking benis from the "job" the next 3 years which is worth $24-30k. His salary comes from a different bucket than the retirement so he now has ~$300k per year to put back into programs in his district which was the point of what he's done. Apparently this will cost him (save the school district) $900,000 if he lives to 87.

CEO's of major multinational corporations earn obscene salaries. But you know.....some local organizations' heads also have odd earnings compared to the folks who actually RUN the school. Hospitals, too.
And it looks like this guy is responsibly pulling the plug before his accounts are ridiculous. The sad thing is that some other yayhoo will be placed in that position, and the costs will continue. I don't begrudge a good decision-maker and/or administrator. Their talents are desperately needed. But how many times' your salary is appropriate to be paid to your supervisor?

The guy spent his entire career or most of it working for the local school district.
Do you think he went into it 40 years ago thinking " I'm gonna bank !" Give me a break. I would be willing to bet that when he finally kickes the bucket his total income earned is less than if he would have joined the private sector. We should probably thank him for his service. I know a number of young school teachers working their way through the system and none are rolling in the dough.

That's fer sher. Where else can you earn $30,000 per year with a master's degree. I have three sisters who are school teachers of various kinds. All three are master's degree holders and various other credentials who care about and talk about their work. And they make peanuts. And they still do it. A number of people in our communities deserve our thanks, and school teachers rank high on the list of people whose hearts and minds are in the right place.

Average teacher salaries in TN (I had to look it up) are about $45k per year. Factoring in the 185 day thing times 8 hours per day, that's 1480 hours per year, vs 2080 hours for a regular, full time employee, so they are actually making 45,000/1480 = $30/hour or about $63k per year based on a 2080 hour man-year that everyone else works. Even at 10 hours per day, they are earning about $51k per year on average with lots of time off that the typical US worker only dreams of. Not too bad, if you ask me. I'm not denigrating the teaching profession (I have kids in school and fully appreciate what teachers do), just injecting some reality into the pay discussion.

Here is a table of starting and average pay for public school teachers. Starting salary in Tennessee is about $32K.
Teacher Salaries By State | Average Salaries For Teachers | Beginning Salaries For Teachers | Teacher Raises | TeacherPortal.com I count at least twenty states with starting salaries under $30K. Bachelor degrees are most certainly a minimum qualification. Master's degrees are becoming almost mandatory. Yes, teachers have summers off. But the teachers I know seem to work quite hard during the school year, with lesson plans, grading papers, meeting with parents, etc. Plus, they have the frustration of dealing with kids whose lives are being screwed up by parents who should be shot in the head and left in the ditch. Their role in our society could hardly be overstated. I have the utmost respect. When I am crowned Emperor, these positions will be handsomely compensated.

She just went back to work down here in TX. Both kids are in school so no need for her to be a stay at home mom any longer. She has 3 degrees, Minor in Communications, BS in History, Masters in Early Childhood Education. She's accepted a gig as an aid in a special needs pre-school. She's out the door at 6:45 and home at 4:30 She'll make $15k for the year. She's loving every minute of it.

I didn't think anyone went into teaching for the money, benis & time off, yep..
As to the The superintendent of the Fresno Cal, if he has 40 years in, he earned the his annual pension, as to the one day retirement, I have no problem, as stated he earned his pension and now is volunteeing his time to the job. Sorry, can't fault him, but I thought is was more $$$ to live in Cali and why is he just accumlinating all this money year in and year out and not investing it???

Not sure about CA but teachers retirement funds typically make wise investments. 2 weeks ago my wife got a check from her old gig in NY. Since she is no longer a NYC PS employee they had to cash her out. She had not contributed the max percentage and had honestly forgotten all about it. It's been sitting there for 6 years or more. The check was for more money than she'll make in her new gig this year. ![]() Was a pleasant surprise.

In Kalifornia it is defined benefit, not defined contribution. They could care less if they make wise investments, state will make up the difference
My assessment is that he wanted to retire before Governor Moonbeam goes after state pensions. They won't be changing them retroactively.
