1853 Remington Pistol..

I picked this up on a trade for $100.00 worth of work on friday. Black powder of course, Italian, Pietta, 8" barrel, nicely done repro. Anybody ever convert one of these to .45 long Colt? I think that would be more fun than black powder. What say ye? Is there a special load of LC that I should use if I decide to convert it?

I need to get my hands on one of those Dave. But I think I would keep it as is. Of course, I have a few other items I need to buy before that time.

PITA? Like what? The Uberti lists at $549. That's not so bad really if the quality is there. I would be just under that if I convert it.

Huh?!? All you need is a conversion cylinder.

Kirst Konverter allows you to fire cartridges from your Cap & Ball gun

I like the New Model 1858 better than the Colt Percussions, as the cylinder is so easy to remove. Had an original wt military marks that I made a few dinero on...

What about ammunition? I have heard that they need to shoot "cowboy" loads only. What the hell is that? Can I just shoot regular 45 long Colts?

The factory 45LC ammo is not very hot as they know it will be used in a lot of OLD guns that might not take the pressure..

David,

I have the exact same pistol in .44 black powder!!! It is actually a blast to shoot, if you have the patience for loading it. I built mine from a kit about 25 years ago.

Hey John ...really? That's cool. This is .44 also. I'll shoot it as a BP gun, but I'm curious about the conversion which would make me shoot it more often for sure. Hell I only have $100 in labor in it, no real cash.

Did you get my email?

Yep...got the e-mail...thanks for that. I was out of town last week, so no worries on you being slammed. I'll get the Crescent out to you this week.

Thanks!

the uberti is significantly altered. the frame has been modified for a gate. it also has an extractor. i don't know if changes to the hammer are necessary, but this is all more involved than just dropping a new cylinder in.

i have a pair of colt navys. they are pleasures to shoot. and a great excuse to keep blackpowder around the house.
