Best way to drill straight consistant holes in wood?

I want to organize my tool box and specifically my sockets in the top. What I want to do is make some wooden 1" of 1/4" with short dowels to hold them by size, depth, etc. I'm not impressed with the plastic socket holders and don't think I can get them all in with them any way.

Not having a drill press, I've used an egg cup bushing holder some and it works well, but I think it only goes to 1/4" (which should work for what I need).

I've looked at used drill presses, but don't want to spend the money for a nice one, question the cheap Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, etc. and really don't have the room for one right now. That said, a cheap bench top model costs about $75-85. It would last for this project and the small amount of work I'd use it for. Here's a used one: http://charleston.craigslist.org/bfs/2539347345.html

What is the best way to drill nice perpendicular holes? Or does anyone have an idea for organizing the sockets?

I can get the egg cup holder and a 1/4" bushing for $25.00.

Ideas?

A benchtop drill press would be fine for that project, but if you shop some more, you can get better and cheaper than the CL ad you linked.

How can you justify passing up a legitimate excuse to buy more tools??

That drill press looks like overkill for what you plan to do, but the price seems good assuming it doesn't have any issues. However, one of the bench height HF drill presses would be more compact and drill vertical holes just fine. Remember, you need drill bits, vises and clamps as well..... and a chuck key AFAIC see.

If that's the only project needing a drill press, you can buy an inexpensive stand that holds a portable/electric drill. Here's a bunch on eBay:

Port-a-lign would work too since you already have a drill motor.

Or a hand drill stand:

Attaches to drill chuck. Good for vertical and horizontal drilling and any angle between. The rails guide the drill. The adjustable stop controls depth of cut.

I have one. Works fine for what it is.

That looks handy. I'll look for one of those.

Thanks!

EDIT: Just found one for $28 on ebay, but the same new for $28 elsewhere.

Is it made of metal?

No, high impact plastic, but mine is reinforced at the threaded parts with metal inserts.

drilling holes..........

buy yourself a dowel jig. they are not expensive and will allow you to choose from several different sizes. Look around and you should be able to find one that meets your needs.

Sounds like an excuse to buy a milling machine to me......

Seriously, use a brad point drill bit, and stick a bubble level on the back of your drill, or eye it up with a square. You don't need precision for this one.....

Actually, if you don't need a drillpress, why not just go to a cabinet shop...they probably wouldn't charge much for what you want.

Well, you might find a handy ol' fart (HOF) that will do it for a half pint.

I have a sickly little drill press and I was drilling 1/4 steel plate this week. Nothing wrong with the little units but the pulley adjustment for speed is not what it should be. Only 3 speeds and the low is not low enough.

Thanks Glen. I appreciate the offer.

I need to get some 1x or ? and lay out what goes where first.

I got out sniped on these bushings last night. Looked like a good deal.
