Window Repair II
 

This is the window on my 3rd floor. When I'm able to climb the scafolding again I'm planning on rebuilding/repairing it. Due to it's size I was thinking of replacing the outside radius with plywood.

Good idea. Marine ply. I do fix-it jobs like this quite a lot. What I would do is cut the ply to size then glue and (stainless steel) screw it over the existing structure. If you pull it to bits to replace sections you may be making extra work for yourself. Then a good quality outdoor silicon filler to keep water out.

Dig out the rotten wood and fill with Aratron. Let dry, shape and sand if necessary, then prime and paint. I don't trust plywood even if its marine grade plywood. It still is plywood and still man made and it can fail. I am not sure if I am willing to take a chance. That window has been up there for a long time. That tells you something about solid lumber. I might do a little extra work and make the arch with marine grade ply and do what the boat builders do. Rap it with epoxy and seal all edges then install and paint. It might be worth the extra effort since it is up so high. The weather is pretty harsh up there, so expansion and contraction is another issue.

The window is 104 years old. It's too far gone to just cover over with a layer (good idea tho). I was thinking two new layers of ply. One slightly larger so the glass has a ledge to sit on. I like the marine ply and stainless ideas.

The window is decorative (now) you can see the vinyl window that I put in when I built the 3rd floor room. It still has to open to let some air thru on that floor.

Azek and you'll never have to do it again. Rout, cut, sand like wood, glues with pvc glue.

As I said in another post my shop could make you a new one if what you have is too far gone. PM if you wish.

We have a small business that is basically a 356 of a woodworking shop and cater to the people who still want something made the old fashioned way. We have 3 carpenters on staff with over 30 years at our mill, who were taught by carpeters who had 30+ years at our mill, who were taught by carpenters who had, you guessed it, 30 + years at our mill. Much of our equipment is 19th century and still in use. Been here 37 years myself - but was just 4 when we came ;)
