Where was this scam going?

So my cell phone rings with a blocked number. For some reason my brother calls from blocked numbers sometimes so I answer it. The Indian sounding guy on the other end of the line informs me that he represents Microsoft and they are monitoring activity that my computer is currently downloading malicious programs as we speak and he wants me to go to my computer.

I say "how did you get my number?" He states that they got it when I registered my computer. Ding, ding, ding!!!! Wrong answer. I have two laptops neither of which I am the original owner and both have been wiped and have fresh installs of windows that did not come with them running and which have never been registered with Microsoft since I don't want those frakers to have my info any more than some hacker.

I state I think he's a scam artist and I'm pretty sure he hung up before I got the chance. This one seems pretty bold. Never heard of this scam before. Where was it going?

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Scam

They get you to go to "their" web site and click on a instal program and then it key logs your bank account number (s)..... been going around for months.....

JE928sx4 09-12-2011 12:02 PM

Hmmm. That wouldn't have worked for them. My computer carries no account numbers in it. :p

You think they'd try a more plausible spiel.

Personally I never speak to anyone that calls from my bank, Credit Card company, etc.....

I tell them flat out there is no way for me to verify that they are who they say they are and that I will call back the number that I have on file for them.

Common scam. He was just trying to get you to divulge your home address, so he could come over in the middle of your night to steal your kidney for sale on the black market.

JE928sx4 09-12-2011 03:05 PM

He had my name and phone number, I'm guessing he had the address also. He can come for my kidneys.......he'll just have to "talk" to a 1911 first. :p

A key logger program logs every keystroke. Ever pay a bill on line, order anything online use your social security number? Then your information would be captured by a logging program. With a little information they could steal your id, order new credit cards and make your life hell.

A buddys 85 yr old mother who has the start of altsheimers got stung by these phone thiefs. He checked her statement and found she has bought plane tickets to Jamaica. Card canceled, person who showed up for the flight detained by the police.

You should have asked him for the secret question/answer that you keep on file with Microsoft. Even give him the topic: what is the brand of machine you purchased to trace calls that are being blocked?

When I got a call like this I asked them who they were calling and they said they were just calling random numbers, they didn't even know who I was.

The guy had my name. That's what disturbs me most.

Yea. Sold some camera equipment not too long ago. Why?

VaSteve 09-12-2011 05:28 PM

I'm just kidding...I just bought some motorcycle parts from a guy with almost the exact same login.

Try answering the phone with "special agent [Add a last name here]" investigations? when it's a blocked or unknown number, they almost always hang up immediately.

When they call me they ask for Mr. XXXXXX with their accent and my last name it's pretty well screwed up....I ask them what they are selling. Then I call them liars and hang up. Within two minutes they call my second phone line and it starts again.

They just go down their lists. They bought a list with your name and number on it.

I've read here before where some have sympathy for some telemarketers because at least they are trying to work a job. Most are really rude if you try to give them any crap. Then there's the scammers.

Kinda taken all the fun of having a phone. I treat almost any incoming call as a nuisance. I only have a phone for my convenience, not yours. That and emergencies.
