Road trip to Monterey this weekend

Taking tomorrow off and heading out early in the AM. Will head over to the coast, take 1 from Santa Cruz to Monterey and points South, probably down to Big Sur, maybe Pacheco Pass to I-5 on the way back. Should be ideal weather for top down motoring.

The Aquarium and 17 mile drive are definitely on the agenda, Cannery Row and the touristy stuff, any suggestions for scenic drives or other things to do and see?

if you go far enough south the wineries on hwy 46 can be fun. Watch out for speed and CHP though.

I love the central coast - need to road trip up to Pismo soon.

Depending on how far south you go on 1... There is a great jump-off some 60 or so miles south of Monterey. It's called Naciemento Road. It pitches skyward and twists around like a plate of spaghetti. It's all paved, but very narrow and follows the theory that guard rails are for pussies.

It drops you into Fort Hunter Ligget. Follow the main road out of the base and you can head to 101 or further over to 5.

Naciemento Road is a kick in the pants!

Marry Ann's Ice Cream. It is right where 17 becomes Ocean Drive (so in Santa Cruz). Best ice cream I have ever had. Last time I was there they had 3 different types of Blackberry ice cream.

phil's fish market in moss landing for lunch. cool area in that it's right down at the harbor, great food for cheap.

if you do make it as far down as 46 as todd suggests there are thunder storms forcast for the valley out around button willow where 46 meets 5 this weekend. been watching the weather out there for a track weekend 9/17-18

have fun, and go see spud at laguna! by the by, how ya been doug? is that the cherries event?

Exactly.

I love that road.

I've also jacked though HL in my trusty H-60. That did not suck.

Angela, that is what I am talkin' bout baby.

Will be Fri and Sat night, staying in Monterey or Seaside, I don't know which because the wife did the reservations.

thanks for the tip on Phil's in Moss Landing Toby

Will have the wife with me, and I am fairly certain that a trip to Laguna Seca or a car museum is not going to thrill her much. She does dig the P cars, but to drive, not to look at.

Cayucos - Schooner's Wharf=seafood, excellent wine list - Cafe Della Via=Italian

Morro Bay - Windows on the water, oysters, seafood, great wine. Dorn's Original Breakers Cafe... Heck, any one of the dozens of places on the water front for food is OK.

I presume you know of the castle?

you guys suck. If I wasn't working OT lately ($$$), I could go visit the desert (land of long straight roads). OK, I guess around Austin, TX, (called "Hill Country", a couple hours away) there are some fun driving roads. We do have "pickin's", but the "picken's" are slim.

++974 on Naciemento Road.

It is awesome. 2 caveats ... first, do not play chicken with the M1's and 2) do not push hard. The road is frequently covered with leaves and other tree debris and can get dicey slippery under hard braking or abrubt steering corrections. Do not ask.

I also really enjoy G16 out of Carmel Valley which rolls out on the other side of the coastal range into Greenfield at 101. If I'm headed home i just jump on 101 and go. If the mood to drive it just hits me but I'm not headed south I get my jollies, flip a u and head back to Carmel Valley for a beer and relax. Great road, with a couple or three very distinct terrain changes.

Dorn's Saturday is PCA-CA Central Coast Region breakfast meeting followed by backroads driving tour ending up at Cholame-James Dean Memorial-Jack Ranch Cafe for lunch. Stop in and say hi if you make it that far

HWY 1 south of Monterey, take carmel valley road through to Arroyo Seco Road, and then Arroyo Seco north to Fort Romie/River Road (past Soledad Misison) and back along the hills to Hwy 68 and back to Monterey. Most of the day to do, more if you stop at any wineries.

At Arroyo Seco Road and Thorne Road, look left and wave, that's my little old vineyard

Cherry's Jubilee

a smaller version of Reno's Hot August Nights is in Monterey this weekend and makes for great hot rod viewing. Friday night features a cruise that is worth attending just for the V8 sounds.

Welcome to Cherry's Jubilee

Thanks guys

Don't know if the wife will go for too much traveling south on the 1. She would however go for a tour of some wineries. Maybe hit 17 mile early and then continue on. Depends where our whims blow us.

She was a much cheaper date when she drank beer.
