how far back do you remember as a little kid?
Oh haha's thread got me thinking. I can remember things pretty far back as a child. I remember snap shots of places, clothing, and etc. way back at the age of 2-3 clearly, with many details. I wish I can remember more, not only the snap shots. My wife couldn't remember a thing until she was much older.
As I got a little older, seeing certain television programs, like cartoons, was a way to remember the past. I still remember clearly eating at my aunt's home watching Kimba the White Lion the week after my sister came home from the hospital. She's two years younger then I. Around the age of 12 or 13, I started to associate a certain time period with music. Every time Heart of Glass plays on the radio, I remember exactly what where I was and what I was doing. Music is a vehicle to help us remember certain thing in the past, but at a much younger age, we really don't have anything to help us. I wish my llittle boys would remember some of the things we do as a family. How far back do some of you remember? |
5 years old I remember watching the Watts riots from the front windows. I lived in Lynwood and that was one to remember.

My first memories are of when I was 3 or 4. I suppose I could have been 2.5, but I'd say 3 or 4 definitely. And then, they are clear memories, but they are essentially just snapshots. Later in life, some memories are more like videos.

I wonder if some kids are just more detail so they remember things at a much younger age. My older boy sees all the details at 3. You can't get it pass him. My young one, couldn't care less. I have asked many people, they just do not remember their past childhood until much older llike 5 or 6.

i remember smells.
i can see images from around age 4-5. my older sister beat the crap out of me, so some of my memories are not that wonderful. but smells, i can remember. some ointment my grandad used, stuff like that. one thing i do remember.. i was maybe 4 or 5. my mom had a that Lincoln with the suicide doors. i remember my mom leaving us in the car to do some quick errands. the stereo had a buttons to raise or lower the antenna. my mom, trying to scare us into not messing with the controls would tell us some of the controls were very dangerous. those antenna buttons for example..the down button would send us to Hell, and the up button to Heaven..either way..we died. my mom was weird. good thing i was smart enough to know they raised and lowered the effen antenna, and i KNEW my mom was full of crap. |
I can remeber the bedroom of the house we moved from when I was 2. I can still tell you the wall colors, layout, the details of my crib and the color of my blanket.

I'm 52 and remmember the day Kennedy got shot. Which is quite good for a kid in NZ.
I must have only been three and I thought it was NOT GOOD my Mom bringing my baby sister back from the hospital - it turns out I was right. |
One hazy memory from being 2 that was later confirmed in a conversation with my parents. Distinct memory when I was 3.
My parents and I were driving across country in our VW bus, camping as we went. We were somewhere in Wyoming. We were eating breakfast when some older boys appeared at the top of a large rock at the edge of our campsite, and pretended to fire rifles at us (they had sticks for rifles). My dad and I gave chase. It was Cowboys/Indians fun. I swear, its clear as as a bell......the sun coming through the pines, the cool of the morning, the surprise and delight of these kids playing with us, my dad and I giving chase...... |
I am having trouble remember yesterday. Really bad memory.

I'm a triplet, two sisters, and we've talked and remember stuff back to early 2's. I remember at 3 y/o the three of us escaped from the house via' a basement window. The police found the three of us at the park at the end of the block in Summit, NJ where we were born.

I remember riding in my dad's lap on his Kawi Z1 when i was like 3 or so.

I remember my mother having an eye patch some time when I was very young. We lived in an apartment in Lynnwood, WA. I remember feeding the ducks at a lake with her, too. I don't remember how old I was though, I'll have to ask her.
I also remember having a red fire truck pedal car and riding it down (what I remember to be) a huge hill. It's probably very small in reality. I think we lived in a blue house. I remember having a purple dinosaur pool wading ring. I might have been three. We'll see if my mom remembers. |
i have a very distinct memory of a photograph that was taken when i was younger than 2 years old. i hadnt ever seen it, and i was chatting with my parents about "the time i was sitting in the car seat in the backyard, petting the chickens." ...to which they dug out the old photo. they couldnt believe i had an recollection of that event.
i can remember stupid things....like eating tator tots on the 3rd sunday of october in 1984, but i forget people's birthdays all of the time. since ive been little, i keep memories in my head by playing a mental "game" when i get bored. i'll start thinking about an event of the past...and then tell myself "i wasn't thinking about _____ right now." it allows complete free thought, and it's funny where my train of thought goes with regards to remembering past events. |
I remember sitting, crying, on a quilt, with toys strewn all around me on my grandmother's lawn, my grandmother trying to calm me, telling me my mom would be back soon.
I was younger than two, because my grandparents had moved to a neighboring town before I reached that age, my mother informed me years later. I have numerous other memories of my grandmother's house and our house, in that same town, from which we moved when I was four. |
Songs are the vehicle that brings up memories most times for me.
"Burning down the house" by The Talking Heads, for example. When I hear that I can instantly go back in time to probably 1986 when our band first started playing out. We were in a dive bar in a farm town and our soundman would play songs like this that really didn't have any connection to our music or what the "guests" wanted to hear. He was a great engineer but a little "off".:D |
vague memories from age 3-5 from nannies, or being dropped of at grand ma , or at aunts... Most memories involve people that took care of me when my mum didn't.

From two years old here.
