Maple, looks like ebony and ??? (the body) If that is ebony, that is a huge piece of it and that ain't cheap.

Nice inlay detail.

On closer inspection, looks like it may be black paint or similar. Some grain in the pix and it's making it hard to tell.

If that's paint (black) then it's beautifully done.

Excuse my ignorance but is this US made?

Yup, it's paint. The "real" Yin Yang Deluxe is ebony and maple (or ebony/holly or purpleheart/maple). And they go for $12K. I ain't robbing the right banks to afford that...this is a much more inexpensive version where the body is made in a small shop in Japan, then the rest is done by hand in NYC.

The top is maple and they do a really nice satin paint. Main body wood is red alder with a thin laminate between the alder and maple. The neck inlays are mop and the butterfly is as well (and each one is different). Fingerboard is ebony. The neck is maple but the finish on it is incredible. Satin lacquer but they do multiple coats with multiple sanding runs in between. Probably the best neck I've every felt.

Sound is crazy - wicked fast instrument that will tear your head off or shake the house. All with really light gauge strings.

Rather than rob banks, I tend to sell instruments when I get new ones. I sometimes take a bit of a hit, but I figure it is kinda like renting to see if I like it. Plus you only live once and you're dead a long time. I never know how many gigs I have left on the schedule so you might as well find and use instruments that inspire you.

The "real deal" with purpleheart body

Nice, very nice. I hope it sounds great and I hope you get many gigs of playing from it.

I can see the attraction for the Redding. I am a sunburst guy at heart, but I prefer a PJ, and I prefer active basses. I've done the passive experiment and the Nordy, while freaking awesome, is up for sale and the other basses I have on order are all actives.

Right now this is my current stable. A pair goes on most gigs (one RA, one fretted). Have a fretted 5 and fretless 5 on order, and a RA Deep 4 (same body shape as the 5 but with 4 strings). The Deep 4 will likely replace the MB-2.

Priorities. Lots of black bean burritos, vacation (huh?) at home, and selling off stuff I no longer use.
